Please could anybody recommend a good steering wheel and footpedals as i
am looking to buy a new one.Force feedback would be nice but not
essential but definately it must have gear change paddels behind the
wheel. Thanks. Andy.

I like my new MS Sidewinder FF wheel very much. It does not have paddles behind
the wheel, but it does have two large rectangular buttons, which work as well
as paddles for me.

Actlabs' Force RS should be shipping this week.  It uses I-Force 2.0, and
includes F1RS for $139.  It is said to be of very sturdy construction, and
has "F1-style" shifters.  You can also get an extra $20 cartridge, and use
it on your Playstation, N64, or Saturn.
Actlabs website is: http://www.actlab.com/
There's also a review of the non-force feedback version at the Digital
Sports page.

Try the new Thrustmaster NASCAR Super Sport.  Not a FF, but the wheel
feels great and it comes with a nice software package (even includes
patches for N2).  It has the requisite behind the wheel gear paddles
and is ultra easy to mount (much easier than the NASCAR PRO wheel.
Here's the best news of all, it's on sale at Best Buy for $79.95
($20.00 less than the NASCAR PRO).

What about quality?  Seems I'm constantly hearing complaints about TM
products breaking.   And what about the pedals,  can you brake and give it
gas at the same time, or do they operate like aircraft pedals (one on means
the other is off)?

Thanks.

Quality is all right--for a wheel in the under $100.00 price range.
Let's face it, if you're a purest and you live to drive, then spend
more money and get a superior wheel.  I've heard about the NASCAR PRO
and breaking springs, but I've only had the Super Sport for a short
time, so I can't comment on that yet.

The software has two modes for gas and brakes.  Using the advanced
setting you do get different axes for gas and brakes, which lets you
tap the brakes in the corners.  Also handy are four buttons on the
wheel face (one of which can be used for reverse).

Overall, it's a great wheel for the money (so far).

That's actually my only complaint about the wheel. I'm thinking of
glueing some
bigger paddles on those buttons (need some cement glue for that, I
guess).

TM has made some design changes under the hood for the Super Sport.
They have stressed tested the springs through millions of cycles and
they seem to be holding up pretty well.  The shaft design for this wheel
has changed also.  Regarding the pedals, they can be configured via
Windows to operate in combined or separate mode (seperate is the default
DOS mode).  I think the new design changes should hopefully dispell the
broken spring syndrome associated with TM products.

Also, with windows programs, you can use the paddles for a total of six
buttons (if the program supports it -- GPL does) if you also use the
pedals.

Haven't used this particular product, but Thrustmaster products seem to
wear pretty much (not extensively) under heavy use (and I'd guess they are
generally used more heavily than some of the costs-next-to-nothing crap),
but are usually easy to repair, plus it's not too hard to get the parts
from TM (usually free of charge, even to us here in Finland).

Nobody else (at the point of my reading) appears to have mentioned
ECCI's impressive CDS4000 system. It's expensive, I'll tell you that
now! But if you're worried about some of the awesomely plasticcy
wheels breaking in a few days, you can forget that with a CDS. It's
made from steel, totally overengineered, awesome build quality, and
weighs in at about 35kg or something like that for both the wheel and
the pedals.

Check out:

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/extreme

It's so good that I recently upgraded my 3 year old, perfectly
functional CDS, to the new top of the range CDS4000 model with Momo
wheel and behind the wheel paddle shifters. There's also a pressure
sensitive brake pedal upgrade which  you can have fitted that I highly
recommend.
