I've finally done it!

by Phil Le » Mon, 01 May 2000 04:00:00

Today I can finally announce that I've broken the 1:30 barrier at Monza in
GPL.  I started the day with a best of 1:30.34 in a Lotus which I set about
8 weeks ago.  Earlier today I got it down to 1:30.04 and about 10 minutes
ago I did a 1:29.86, again in a Lotus.  I'm over the moon!

I put my sudden improvement down to three things.  The first is a new setup
I've developed myself for the Lotus using the GRE utility.  Now I finally
seem to have tamed the beast.  I think the single most useful feature of GRE
is the ability to have bump stops of less than an inch.  I ran with 0.5"
stops and a ride height of 3.75" which handles just right for my driving
style.  Thanks to Nate and Alison Hine for their superb utility and help
document.

The second reason for my improvement came from a post here a couple of days
ago.  Someone, I can't remember who but they have my eternal thanks, said
that they had improved their times by braking earlier but less hard.  I
started doing this today and it hasn't half made a difference.

The final reason for my improvement is that I've been racing against the AI
with global hype disabled, rather than trying to set a record by hot
lapping.  The drivers don't take any prisoners when you disable global hype.
The current lap record is held by John Surtees at 1:27.38!  I've found that
I drive much faster when there is a fast driver behind me.  On my record lap
I didn't get a tow from anyone on the whole lap but I was being followed
very closely throughout.  It certainly seemed to improve my braking.

Anyway, that's my little self congratulatory post finished.  I just felt I
had to let out the great feeling somewhere.

Now if I could only break 1:29....

Cheers

Phil

I've finally done it!

by Coli » Mon, 01 May 2000 04:00:00

When I bought GPL I ran the F2's exclusively until a few days ago when I
took the plunge and tried the F1 cars.
Picked the Ferrari, used A. Hine's setups and was stuck in the mid 1:32's.
Decided to take a chance, jumped into the Lotus and within 5 laps I was
doing 1:29 - 1:30 consistently.
Give the Lotus a try.  Braking is outstanding, superb balance on turn-in.
It gets very squirrelly <sp> on acceleration out of turns though.

Well done, although I assume you do realise that as you were being followed
closely, that can have a similar effect to getting a tow.

Very well done, it is a real achievement.

I only got below 1:30 a couple of months ago, but have since done it a
few times. Leaving Monza for a while and trying other tracks, then going
back to Monza helped a lot.

Well done....

If you feel like commiting a cardinal sin then go ahead.  But my advice is stay
with the Eagle.  I tried switching cars when i was stuck in the high 1:30s for
a month or so and it didnt help at all.  I just ran high 1:30s in a different
car.

How do you guys DRIVE the Lotus?  I could handle the acceleration out of turns.
It's the skittishness(izzat a word?) during braking that gets me...

You're probably hitting the bumpstops on braking.  This was my problem which
I solved using GRE.  I've attached the setup I used for my 1:29.86 which you
may like to try.  It has low bump stops and a high ride height to sort out
the braking problems.

Cheers

My third thankyou post...Phil this is the setup I've
been looking for...and thanks to the Eagle twins Alison and
her brother for producing GRE.  I HATED the Lotus. I would try
default setups, fast lap setups , setups that the author claimed
were very stable and still I'd be swapping ends several times a lap.
here's the result of my firt offline race with your setup.
11 laps Intermediate
# of laps UNDER my PB...5
# of spins..............1
# of times I didn't lock up at all approaching Parabolica...2
# of botched approaches to the Parabolica...2
# of times I passed and repassed Ginther....6
# of times I got lapped.....0
# of time I sighted Surtees..0 (still have work to do)
So Far I've lowered 2 seconds off my Sluggomatic PB...
I'm sure I've got another second at least...
OH!  AND HERE'S a FIRST..
# of time I had to BRAKE HARD to keep from ramming the
AI at Lesmos...............2!
