I've heard that you can put squash balls behind the pedals to make them more
"progressive" but then how can you floor the pedals with the balls?

Recalibrate your pedals with the squash ball in place.

Would a recalibration not solve this prob?

The squash ball is a mod for the brake pedal.
You calibrate the pedal by pushing down as hard as you
want the pedal to feel. This will give you a shorter throw,
progressive resistance feel. Just push the brake pedal the
same distance/pressure each time you calibrate.
