I started a season with random breakdowns turned on  I broke down three times
in the first four races.! Is this random or does it have something to do with
engine stress?

A little of both.  I am running a season with 25% length and I am in the
12th race and no breakdowns yet.  I ran a single Dega race and broke
down on the 4th lap with same setup I used for 2 season dega races.  If
you have your 4th gear redlighting(warning light) 3/4 down the
straightaway or you shift gears after redlighting you will probably
breakdown more often.
I only broke down once, but I also have my setups where I don't redlight
until I am at the end of the straight or I am drafting.

Random breakdowns are exactly that, random.

However, even with random breakdowns turned off, the engine is not
indestructible (nor are the tires).

Over-stressing the motor by by turning too many RPMs will eventually
cause it to fail. (If you really blow past 8500, like 9700 or so, the
engine will fail almost instantly... But lap after lap brushing 9200
or 9300 under load will wear your engine out long before the end of
medium length race.) Get a taller fourth gear if this is your problem.

Just curious, Jim, is it the number of times over 9200 or is it the amount
of time the engine is over-revved? We had a Late Night race at Bristol
Friday night, and one of my teammates got nailed by this with 11 to go in a
200 lapper. He was curious as to what the failure mode is. BTW, I warned
him about it, must've jinxed him. :(

It's a cumulative effect by some function of (in decreasing order of
importance) amount over-revved, amount of time spent over-revved,
throttle position while over-revved, and some minor temperature
effects.

Engine wear is minimal up to around 8400 RPM, then is slight, but
noticable up to about 8700, and then is progressively more severe at
higher and higher RPMs.

Wow, so that was it!  I wondered where I picked up that extra position!
