I started a season with random breakdowns turned on I broke down three times
in the first four races.! Is this random or does it have something to do with
engine stress?

However, even with random breakdowns turned off, the engine is not
indestructible (nor are the tires).
Over-stressing the motor by by turning too many RPMs will eventually
cause it to fail. (If you really blow past 8500, like 9700 or so, the
engine will fail almost instantly... But lap after lap brushing 9200
or 9300 under load will wear your engine out long before the end of
medium length race.) Get a taller fourth gear if this is your problem.

It's a cumulative effect by some function of (in decreasing order of
importance) amount over-revved, amount of time spent over-revved,
throttle position while over-revved, and some minor temperature
effects.
Engine wear is minimal up to around 8400 RPM, then is slight, but
noticable up to about 8700, and then is progressively more severe at
higher and higher RPMs.

> Just curious, Jim, is it the number of times over 9200 or is it the amount
