Hi,

I'm have managed to get hold of an old Thrustmaster Charger wheel,
with no pedals, also known as a Thrustmaster NASCAR charger.

The problem is that in the calibaration screen in GPL the RAW and
Calib (?) settings are not stable, they have a case of the jitters.

I've looked for information on cleaning the POTS but the inside of the
wheel does not appear to match the instructions, whereby the POT
appears to be a sealed unit, there are 2 cogs that could be cleaned
but i don't know if this will do more harm than good.

thanks, mark.......................

I had that on occasion when my wheel was brand new, and still do, which
makes me believe it's more likely a software issue than hardware.  I also
anxiously await advice ;-)

Just buy new pots.  They aren't expensive.  Cleaning is a temporary
fix, anyway.  All pots wear out over time.

You may also have an intermittent short somewhere, especially if you
play in a very dusty environment.  Try blowing any printed circuit
boards with canned air.

My wheel does this quite a bit, but only when I mash the gas.  Go
figure.

HTH,
Gerald

Mark, first try deleting the controls.cfg file in the
*:\SIERRA\gpl\players\"YOUR PLAYER NAMES" folder and recalibrate in game.
And before you do this, you may want to do the same in the *** Options
part of Control Panel. Remove what ever you have the TM Charger installed
as, Thrustmaster Software?? And create it as a joystick control with all the
buttons and recalibrate. I have had very good results doing this.

But all this seems to be a temporary cure for awhile if you need a quick
fix. But the real solution is to replace the pots, (and have some spares on
hand if they are hard to find) and do the same deleting procedure as above.

And also there is that DirectX Tweak Utility that some seem to use.

There does seem to be a calibration problem in the GPL Game Engine that has
been carried over into Nascar 4 & 2002. i.e.. Twitchy wheel in GPL\N4\2002
but not in other driving games like N2\Legends\N3\NFSHS\NFSPU etc.

booo :-(

Good Luck, ahh what the heck, jist buy a new wheel, heh, I got to do a
search for pots on my Logitech wheel, when I git a "RoundTooIt". < have
anyone seen one of these lately? LOL

You mean those little tchotchkys that look like wooden nickels?  Not
in about 20 years.  If anyone has a line on some, my wife would be
VERY interested, I'm sure.  LOL.

Mark, Repair Kits are right there on the Thrustmaster site under Support.
Here's the link.

http://us.thrustmaster.com/support/repairkit/index.php3

$16.94 for all three pots including shipping is not to bad. That's about
$3.35 a pot without shipping, fair enough.

Or if you want to get a stock of pots cheaper per unit try some mail order
electrical suppliers. (warning you may have to cut the shaft length and file
the flat spot for "D" shape shafts). Here's one place to start.

Yes Gerald, I think I had a landlord that gave me one to remind me too clean
the junk engine/transmission parts out of the garage in a house that I was
renting one time. Now where was that? Probably on the workbench in the
garage with all the parts that I left him with when I moved out. heh, LOL
