Hey -
I've been waiting a long time like everyone else (checking 1000+ *when
will GP2 be released* posts a day) and the whining for the ICR2 patch.
Quick Impressions->
1) ICR2 cars are  VERY nervous but give you a better sensation of
speed
2)The patch cleared up the car balance problems
3) GP2 is a graphics pig made for machines that will be out in a year
4) the 3D graphics engine gives you a graet sensation of driving. The
car pitches, the brakes lock, it gets hairy on the curbs and you loose
it when you plant the accellerator- LIKE IT SHOULD! <--- Read this
Sierra!

Both games are great in there own way but for the next while I'll be
doing F1GP2 like the rest of you,
later,

I agree with you there.  I really like the feel when going over the
curbs and the need to keep the wheel spin down.  GP2 models this way
better than ICR2.  However, it doesn't appear that GP2 models the weight
shift from front to rear or rear to front under acceleration and
braking.  I really like the feel of ICR2 when it comes to using real
racing techniques like trail-braking.  GP2 just doesn't give me that
feel.

After playing ICR2 since in came out last year, GP2 has forced me to change my
braking style.  I'm a joystick luser, and in ICR2, I could just mash one of the
fire buttons to hit the brakes and slow the car down without fear of tire
lockups that chew up tires (I know the tires in ICR2 lock up (although there's
no audio or visual prompt that tells you so), but the tires don't seem to get
affected real badly).  However, if I use that same braking technique in GP2,
the tires lock up real easily and the tires wear out faster than in ICR2.

I'm now being forced to learn to brake in GP2 by pushing forward on the
joystick, so I don't lock 'em up at every low-speed corner entry, I can
trail-brake in the corners without locking up, and my car can employ one-stop
pit strategies instead of being forced to go to two stops because my tires are
worn out so fast.

I'm interested in your choice of controls - both before and now.

Surely braking and accelaration are the two analog variables you need
loads of control over to drive smoothly, and thus using these on the Y-
axis of the joystick seems obvious. Use the buttons for up and down
changing gears - after all that's a digital, not analog, action.

That way you get smooth control of accelaration and braking, whilst
controlling what gear you enter and exit a corner in.

This seems so obvious an arrangement I'm often suprised other patterns
seem to make sense to people - but perhaps mine looks equally
strange.....

Cheers!

But you need a stick with 'square' corners to get good
braking/revving on y-axis. Mine has round movement (no corners),
and so it extremely difficult to brake when you are turning hard,
the stick has very little or no movement in y-direction when the
stick is fully left/right.

Now I'm using the throttle lever on my stick for revving and a
home-made plug-in brake pedal (actually a volume pedal from a
synthesizer :).

Ah ha - never seen/used a joystick like that so I'd not appreciated this
was a problem.

It doesn't happen with my old (3 years or more) but trusty (so far) CH
Flightstick.....though whilst turning in hard while on the brakes is OK
in ICR2 in GP2 you've got locked wheels and are heading straight on onto
the kitty litter if you try that too much. Can often hold full power
accelarating out of a corner early though - or catch the slide when it's
too much!

Cheers!
