N2003 with Direcway Satellite?

by Todd » Sat, 08 Mar 2003 15:10:25

I live in an area that has no dsl, no cable, and can only connect at 26k
with a 56k modem.  I'm thinking of getting satellite internet but do not
know if it is ok with racing games online or any game for that matter.  I
was told that the lag time is to high since the signal has to travel out to
space and come back and that it is not good for ***.  Although it is
great for internet browsing and downloading.  Does anyone out there have
satellite internet or have any knowledge about it?
Thanks,
Todd

My buddy just dropped his satellite because his ping rates were too high and
way too much warping.  Some games we could not even connect.  Sorry.

Yes *** on SAT is really out of the question.. The ping rates will
be pretty darn high.. Remember your TCP/IP packet has to travel 88,000
miles.. Up to the SAT 44k then down to you 44k...

Satellite is FAR worse than dial-up for ***, unfortunately, and Satellite
is completely unsuitable for the purpose.

Satellite is ok for downloading, email, and _maybe_ streaming.

The problem is latency.  It's a long, LONG way up to that bird and Satellite
latencies are measured in seconds, not milliseconds.

When I had DirecPC my downstream latency was always between 1000 and 2000
msec.

Check for local providers of wirelesss internet.  Much better than dialup
(256K)

Thanks for the input. I guess I will not get the Satellite then.

Now I guess I can't join a league or race anyone :(

Thanks,

Todd

Like Tim said, check and see if wireless is an option.  Our new local
one is offering:

Speed
 Monthly
 Setup

192k Down / 192k Up
 $49.00
$199.00 Single Computer System or $299.00 Multiple Computers

384k Down / 192k Up
 $65.00
$199.00 Single Computer System or $299.00 Multiple Computers

512k Down / 512k Up
 $85.00
$199.00 Single Computer System or $299.00 Multiple Computers

1500k Down / 1500k Up
 $100.00
$199.00 Single Computer System or $299.00 Multiple Computers

The 1500/1500 is only $10 more a month than what we are paying for
Direcway Business Edition!  The install and equipment are way less
than what I paid for Direcway, and includes a router and network
setup.

Should be available in the valley sometime this month!!  Yeah baby!

There are still some OFFline leagues...These are as 'fun' as online
events, but you get the tension of waiting for the other driver's results
to be announced.
