LFS: I'm to slow

I bought TOCA Race Driver recently, thought it was a bit arcady. but
it got me playing online which I really enjoyed. So after browsing
this group I downloaded LFS.

It's a great game. But I suck at it. My best time in the F is 1.39.40
while everyone else is turning in 1.35 laps in the same car.

I've downloaded some setups and these have helped but I think it's my
driving.

Can somebody point me to a replay of a hot lap so I can study it, and
if possible the setup that was used?

Go to

for a setup and
http://forum.racesimcentral.com/showpost.php?s=&action=showpost&posti...
for a replay.  Also, most people in the GTI are NOT doing laps in the 35s.
It sounds like you happened to join into a server with particularly quick
drivers at the time.  Myself, I can run fairly consistent laps in the 35s
with a best time of under 1:35.50.

Can't you? I'm already a member, so obviously couldn't go through the
whole process, but the registration form displays normally once
you've agreed to the T&Cs. It'd be a bit much to fill that lot in,
and *then* be told it was a wasted trip!

It has been a while since I ran LFS, but IIRC,
the engine torque vs RPM curve is such that you don't want to run it all
the way up to the rev limiter before shifting. The optimum is shifting
earlier to keep the highest average power for acceleration.

They do seem to have opened registrations again and I've registered, they
are checking them all manually and I'm waiting for my activation.

I have sort of assumed that the red light comes on when another gear
would offer more pull - as you say it comes on well before the redline.

Would be interesting to see the torque curve though.

The official LiveForSpeed forums has lots of 1.35.** gti replays in
them, such as this one..

The best public gti setup so far is Anhanguera's
which does 1.35's easily.
