Sorry for the cheesey subject line, but I am reading
a bunch of postings that are all answered in the FAQ's
(or readme or printme or ...).
So here's FAQ 3, 2 and 1 together.
*** CART FAQ #3 ***
Here's the third FAQ answering the questions we see appearing
about CART Precision Racing.
We are all monitoring the newsgroups and we'll try to answer
all the questions we find.
Keep the comments coming!!!
NOTE: Some of these only apply to the full version,
not the Trial.
** WHAT'S THE QUICKEST WAY BACK TO MY***PIT? ***
Press HOME.
*** "BANGING NOISE" WHEN BOOST >5 ***
The noise you are hearing is the pop off valve for the Boost
pressure.
In real life the CART teams are limited to 40 inches of boost.
To regulate the pressure they fit a pop off valve or
waste gate to the turbo (Its the round thing you see
sticking up on the cowling behind the drivers head. When
the pressure gets greater than 40 inches in the turbo
the waste gate opens up and releases the excess pressure.
You don't want this to happen in real
life because the pressure drops below 40 before
it will rise and activate
the pop off valve again.
You can see this happening in the game by setting
up you PI dash to display the boost pressure.
Now play with the boost knob
and notice how the pressure changes.
When its at 5 the pressure is 40 when
you move it to 6 it drops drastically
because the waste gate is constantly
opening.
*** TOO MUCH GRIP? ***
This Sim was developed with the full cooperation and testing
input of many CART drivers (Blundell, Rahal, several others ...)
- the physics model is based on their tuning input.
I am sure some of you have raced open wheel cars, but for
the rest of you we do want to stress that you should not
be measuring what is "realistic" by simply referring to
other Sims you may play.
Who is to say that other feel is the "correct" one?
Yes CART feels different - this is natural.
Does it have "unrealistic grip"?
The professional CART drivers don't think so.
Needless to say you "cannot please all the people all the time"
but at least keep an open mind.
*** DARK GRAPHICS ***
Some monitors and video cards have dark gamma setup.
Apart from the obvious brightness and contrast controls, look at
your 3dfx control panel (if you have one). Adjust the gamma
there.
Also setting image quality to "GOOD" changes some of
the lighting effects - this may make it "brighter".
*** FRAME RATE ***
No, frame rate is not capped (!).
With an optimized setup we see 60fps+
With good video drivers CART performance is very good.
Here are factors that make a big difference on perf,
but a small reduction in eye-candy:-
* Set image quality to "GOOD"
* Set visibility at about 21 or less (cntrl F and H)
* Switch off Picture in Picture
If this isn't enough, try ...
* Switch off sky and trackside objects and hills
* Set mirrors to be "cars only"
If this doesn't help, get a new system ;)
*** WINDOW SIZE ADJUSTMENT ***
Use "[" and "]" to adjust window size/frame rate balance
*** DEFAULT GARAGE SETUPS ***
The game defaults to generic (average) <default> garage setups.
Try the included "sample" setup(s) for
better handling (from the garage file dropdown).
Or download other setups from CPR fansites - for example:-
http://www.racesimcentral.net/://www.quiknet.com/~joja/
Or better still, develop your own!
*** COLLISIONS ***
Car collisions vary according to speed, angle and skill level -
we do not use one "generic" collision routine
- this is why the car responds differently during collisions.
Ever seen a real "predictable" crash? ;)
*** CD MUSIC VOLUME ***
Use the Win95 volume control to set your CD audio level.
Game will play any audio CD you have in the drive
(make sure you have COMPLETE install to prevent CD swaps).
*** MIRROR ADJUSTMENTS ***
Set your mirror angles up under the miscellaneous tab
in the garage. They work as expected.
*** GRAPHICS UNDER HARDWARE ACCELERATION ***
Make sure you have "Hardware Acceleration" selected
from the "Graphics" dialog and ...
* MAKE SURE YOU ARE RUNNING FULLSCREEN (no menu bar)
* MAKE SURE YOU ARE RUNNING FULLSCREEN (no menu bar)
* MAKE SURE YOU ARE RUNNING FULLSCREEN (no menu bar)
Press F4 a few times if you're not sure. Acceleration ONLY works in fullscreen!
*** FULLSCREEN REPLAYS ***
Click the ZOOM button to see your stunning win (crash?)
in all its fullscreen glory - essential if you are
using hardware acceleration (see above).
*** HEAD PANNING ***
Some love it, some hate it. Your choice:
Disable using REALISM dialog.
*** CLIPPING DISTANCE ***
Use control-F to move this out
control-H moves it closer
With EVERYTHING ON (max clipping, all graphics ON,
high image quality etc etc) CPR does require a
fast system - we made CPR scalable so
we give a good experience for low-end systems but
still provide extra goodies for the power users.
*** STEERING WHEEL/PEDAL COMBOS ***
Read the README for setup instructions for different
systems under Win95.
*** STEERING TUNING ***
CPR steering will feel different from other Sims
you have played - guaranteed!
Every user has different experience and expectations
on steering input, therefore CPR offers a high degree
of adjustment on steering control using the "speed sensitive"
and "non-linear" sliders in the control dialog.
Play with these until you find the setting that you
prefer - there is no "right" and "wrong" setting,
just "yours"!
*** AI CARS SKILL ***
It is possible to change the computer opponents skill
more precisely than ROOKIE, INTERMEDIATE, PROFESSIONAL
from the cart.ini file in the cart system directory:-
Here's how:-
Find the entries named "skilltrack" and you will see
6 numbers following each track.
Find the track that you want to edit and adjust the numbers
- here's the format:-
<rookie_min, rookie_max, intermediate_min, intermediate_max,
professional_min, professional_max>
The numbers are % (999=100%) and the "min" number is the setting for the
slowest AI car on the track, "max" is the fastest AI car.
*** DISPLAYING FRAME RATE ***
Type FRAME during the game - display is in bottom right corner.
*** CAPTURED IN PITS ***
To make the motion capture work cleanly the autopilot
kicks in when you enter the pit lane. To avoid this just
disable pitstops from the realism menu.
*** FLAGS ***
Yellow flags appear when your car is involved in an accident,
but it is more of a "local yellow" than a full track yellow.
*** AI CARS GO SLOW ***
In ROOKIE and INTERMEDIATE some AI cars do go slower - they
are designed to help beginners enjoy the game. We are seeing as
many messages about CPR being "hard for beginners" as those
saying "some cars are too easy to beat".
Go to PROFESSIONAL if you want fast opponents!
