I just wish you guys would chill on this pirated software.
I'd like to see Charlie Heath come back and be an
active participant in this news group.

He can't.
He was placed on the horns of a dilemma: being an active employee of
Papyrus, visiting this NG and seeing the promotion of hacked software
produced by his employer. Ethics would have required him to provide his
employer with the information relating to the subject posts.
He therefore chose not to be placed in such an uncomfortable position by
not visiting this NG.

"To be or not to be? Well, I'd rather 'be', if you don't mind!"
Exactly what has the term "Pirated Software" come to mean these days?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesnt it generally mean copying an entire
commercial program and then distributing it either for free or personal
profit? I was under the impression that all these tracks were just edits
to an exsisting program, which I happened to have paid full price for. If
I want to change the programs code once I have bought, why not? If others
want to make the same changes to the same game which they have bought, why
can't I tell them how to do it? And when did this NG turn into a
Congressional Ethics committee? <VBG> The tracks make improvements on an
already great game, I don't think it should be considered piracy.

Quite right, as long as all that is being shared is the "how" part. The
problem arises to copyright violation and piracy when the "finished"
product is shared.

First off, it doesn't matter what you or I think. The law says it is
copyright infringement, of which the first offense carries a $100,000
fine. Beyond that, let's say you're an architect who designs a building
over the course of many months. You copyright your work (ie. the
plans), then offer a license to use them to a customer for $12,000.
Later, you find that the "customer" has given your plans to several
other of your potential customers for free, thus preventing you from
selling the plans further. Is this fair? At some point, you'd probably
hear your customer attempt to justify his/her dishonesty by uttering,
"Hey, I paid for those plans, I'll give them to whomever I wish." Is
this fair? If so, what does the term "copyright" mean, and what is it
worth?
Congress is now out of session, but honesty and ethics are never out of
style.
God Bless,
Steve
