GPL does funny things to my BIOS

by Laurence Wilme » Thu, 04 Jan 2001 08:44:45

Hi
Just starting with GPL - it's GREAT! - but sometimes I run it to do a
few laps forgetting to close my internet connection first.
Then what happens is that it locks up, and on reset my PIII 550
reboots as a PIII 366  (I assume at 66FSB instead of the 110FSB I
usually run it at). Go into BIOS on reboot and it still says 110FSB?
It's quite OK provided I close all programmes first, but I'd quite
like to know what causes this - is it a heat problem??
Thanks

Sounds like to me you should be calling whom-ever built your system and
demand a refund...if you paid for a PIII 550, you didn't get it....

Could be Laurence,
I encountered the same problem with an older system of mine. Never had
problems running applications even Microsoft flight simulator but GPL seems
to really stress the hell out of CPU's. So if your system is running on the
edge GPL will sometimes push them over the heat limit.
I put a better heatsink/fan on my system and all problems went away. :)
Good luck,
Dave B
