Set ups - Is there a sequence to follow?

by Detonat » Sat, 26 Jun 1999 04:00:00

When starting to test set ups, is there an order or sequence of items to change
and experiment with?  What I mean is, do I start with gearbox ratios, then final
drive, move on to wing angle and so forth?

As a newcomer, I'm finding this to be a bit problematic, cos I dunno where to
start, and how to gauge a successful set up in one area against another in a
different aspect of the car - like gear ratios and aerodynamics, mentioned
above.

Anyone have any suggestions on where it is practical to start when changing the
car?

Many thanks

For me, I start on adjusting the handling to my liking.  The setup's no good if
you can't control the car.  Then I work on tire traction for getting through
the corners fast, then gearing.

Yeah, I haven't got much of a clue either, though I normally try and get
my tire temps pretty even first, then make sure they're not overheating,
and also make sure I'm not locking up under braking.  I've checked out
various web sites that give general tips, but somehow they just don't
give me the real whys and whynots.

What I find in gpl for instance is that no matter how many changes I
make its more a hit and miss affair.  Though as a rule my lap times have
improved, I'm not sure that this is because I'm getting used to the
car/track etc, even though I don't normally implement changes until I've
driven at least 30 or 40 laps and more.

Ideally, say in gpl again, what i need is someone to start with a
default setup, giving brief info on lap times, where the car's difficult
and why etc. Then take a step by step route as to what was changed and
why, eventually ending up with the finished setup and improved lap times
to boot :-)  I could then follow the same setup procedure - driving
style permitting - and get a better knowledge of what is going on.
