Not surprising. I was leaked a week or so a go that Microsoft is dropping
the price of the X box to $199.

At E3 the xbox will be reduced to $199. Definitely. The PS2 _MAY_ follow
suit - they don't have any reason to, but being the most expensive console
isn't fantastic for casual sales :-)

The GC is being reduced to $150 in September.

That is apparently the current state of affairs, and these are global price
cuts. What I can't understand is that Microsoft were selling the xbox at a
loss when it was three hundred odd quid ( sterling), and after E3 it will
be about 130-150. No wonder Nvidia are angry...

The PS2 won't follow suit. It has taken the initiative ;)
Sony announced an official price drop earlier today.

And now, within hours of it, Microsoft did the same.

It's war, baby. ;)

It's bullshit.. When the price of games start coming down, then he real war will start.
They can give the consoles away. It won't affect their overall marketing strategy or their
profit margins. Hardware costs are already written off .

Part of the PS2 price drop announcement was a reduction in price for 1st
party games down from $50 to $40, and  memory cards & controllers from $35
down to $25.

Again, a move Microsoft has copied - they hacked prices across the board.
They also finally released a line of games at the $20-$25 price range...

That's ridiculous.  If an airline cuts rates, competing lines running the
same route do, too.  Some of the highly contested routes (like Los
Angeles-San Francisco) are always drawing price wars, and everyone follows
because - despite already losing money on the runs - they can't afford not
to compete for fear of losing what business they are already losing money
on.  Remember gas wars?  One station cuts, and eventually they all did.
Then someone finally raised the prices, and everyone went back up.  Every
industry which has competing products eventually tussles with competitors
and pricing.  Intel vs. AMD.  Ford vs. Chevy.  Visa vs. MasterCard.  Safeway
vs. Piggy Wiggly, or whatever.

Guess they didn't do okay then on my purchase of one, and only one, game ;-)

GT3?
Hm, so if we all buy an X-Box, but only run the game that comes with
buying the console (I assume), we can make the X-Box go bankrupt! ;-)

PS2 price drop?

I have always said, it is the games that make the console. That is why I
bought a PS2. The GC is so much better than the PS2 in terms of hardware
(and price), although it doesn't have a DVD player, but I don't want a GC
because the 2 GC games I want to play right now are coming to the PS2
anyway. Using this perspective, I would prefer a Dreamcast to an xbox (there
just aren't any xbox games I really want).

The current sales figures are:

PS2 +30 million
GC +4 million
XBOX expects 3.5 - 4million by the end of June

Just in case you attribute this to the massive headstart enjoyed by the PS2,
listen to this:

"Looking ahead, Bach [Microsoft's Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach] said the
company forecasts cumulative shipments to reach between 9 million and 11
million units by June 2003, which will mark 20 months of sales for the
console since it first hit the shelves in the U.S. in November 2001.
In contrast, the PS2 shipments hit 10.6 million units at the end of March
2001, after 13 months on sale, and totaled 19.6 million after 19 months, the
closest figure available from SCEI with which to compare against Microsoft's
forecast."

I think Microsoft are managing that quite well on there own... :-)
