P-166, Matrox Cannot Run ICR!!

Help!!! I just bought a P-166, 32 Megs of EDO RAM, Matrox Millenium (OEM),
with a SB 32 PNP, but I cannot run ICR2!!! After a few minutes of racing
the screen either locks up, and fills with numeric codes. I have tried it
with a boot disk, with and without UNIVIBE, etc. Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

Hmm, are you using EMM386 in your config.sys file?  I have a similar setup and
have had no problems.  However, I have a SB16 Value.

First check the BIOS number on the Matrox, it flashes quickly on the
screen when you turn on the machine.  The latest Bios is v2.0.
Next try using different sound settings such as 8-bit or none at all.
Try to narrow the problem down.  A patch for ICR2 should be available
very soon from Papy, that may help also.

I had similar problems with my 6x86....turned out to be heat. You
could heat a small house with one of these things. That obviously is
not the problem if ONLY icr crashes and nothing else. Try deleting the
game and re-installing it, but don't forgot to save those setups
first!

The problem is probably the EMM386 line.  I believe that Rick Genter said not
to use EMM386.  I removed it from my config.sys file and have had no
screen freezes since.  I can now run 50% length races and have the whole
replay at the end.  Great for grabbing screenshots of those really
unbelievable outbreaking maneuvers!

Might want to make sure your not running Smartdrive.  I know NASCAR
doesn't like it.  Good luck.

I am having the exact same problem with my P-166. I had a P-90 that
ran Indycar II just fine and all I did was replace the motherboard.
Everything else has remained the same. I have 32 Mb RAM, a #9 GxePro
Video card and a Sound Blaster 16 Value. After I have played Indycar
II for 10 - 20 minutes it just freezes. I thought it must be the new
motherboard and processor since that is the only thing that changed on
my machine. I do run EMM386 in my config.sys file.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You just said what I was going to say, it sounds like a heat problem. If you
don't have a heat sink and/or cpu fan on your Pentium, get one. Or if you want
to try and diagnose the problem before spending any $$, take the case off of
your computer and point a small household fan in the processor's direction. If
your crashing problems go away, you've found the culprit.

All dos games seem to have this problem on my machine after a period
of time, so it definitely sounds like a heat problem. However, I do
have a cpu fan and it seems to be working fine. I will try the
household fan technique. Thanks for the advice.
