The new Logitech Momo with the shifter or the "older" Momo. Newegg has the
older one for $116. Good price ?

Personally, I would opt for the Momo Force (older red case with leather
wrapped wheel). There have been a lot of reports of problems with the
switches in the paddle shifters on the new Momo Racing wheel. See this
thread at RSC:

Definitely the "older" MOMO for $116.  I had the "newer" version for a total
of 6 weeks before the right shifter broke.  That apparently is a frequent
occurence with that wheel.  I ended up replacing it with the "older" MOMO
(also for $116 from newegg -- great price), and the build quality is
infinitely better.  (However, I found it a bit more difficult to set it up to
my tastes....)

I've used both extensively so here's my take on it -

MOMO Force (Old Red One)
------------------------
- Wheel is leather but is rock hard and feels more like hard, shiny plastic.

- Pedals have pivoting heads which is more of a hinderance than a help and
brake travel angle is quite different to the throttle which is strange

- Steel wheel bearing feels nice and solid

- Aluminium paddle shifters won't break easily

- Clamping system is slighly above average

- 6 face buttons plus 2 shifter paddles gives a total of 8 buttons

MOMO Racing (New Black One)
---------------------------
- *** wheel feels very nice to grip.

- Pedals have nice large heads that resemble real pedals and travel angle
and length is good

- Uses Optical wheel technology for slighly more precise feel than other pot
wheels

- Shifter included which can be on left or right and used as two extra
buttons for a total of 10 buttons

- Shifter paddles are plastic and may break if abused

- Plastic wheel bearing - although it feels quite solid and doesn't have any
'play'

- Clamping system requires removing a small cover off the wheel to remove
but works quite well and doesn't require as much tightening as the MOMO
Force clamps

Force Feedback for both wheels feels identical.

So there you go.  Basically, if you're a rugged, ape-like driver that deals
out a lot of punishment, get the original MOMO Force.  If you're a
relatively calm driver that doesn't have a history of constantly breaking
things, get the new MOMO Racing.

Just a single addendum to your synopsis.

The Momo Racing has a known issue with the right paddle.  Its a design flaw
and will break with enough usage.  I went through 3 before I finally picked
up the Force which is just as you describe.

That was fixed some time ago and as far as I'm told, none of the current
models on the shelves should suffer that problem.  I've been using mine for
several hours per day for the last 2 months and it's yet to show the
slightest signs of wear.

Thanks Guys,

I have a Formula Force GP right now and am looking (possibly) for a new
wheel. I have been having a strange problem with F12002, that I am thinking
may be the Formula Force or its software.

I get a strange stuttering problem only when it is raining. The frames
"slide" into place, or "stutter" only in corners (usually). I have this
problem with my old machine (Soyo SY-KT400, XP2400, 512MB, GF4 Ti4200) and
now with a new machine (Asus A7N8X-Deluxe, XP2400, 512MB, Radeon 9500 128)
that I just built. Only equipment transferred is the Formula Force GP.

Is it safe to say that the new Momo is comparable to the Formula Force GP in
build quality ?
Does it (or the older Momo) use the same Wingman Software (assuming it does)
?

Thanks again

The MOMO Racing is definitely better quality than the Wingman FFGP.  I would
agree that if you're a very heavy-handed driver, the old MOMO Force might be
worth the extra $45 even if it's not quite as ergonomic as the new MOMO
Racing.

Funny, all 3 I had came from a shelf :-) and still had the same problems.
The first was purchased just over 6 weeks ago and the last repl was 2 weeks
ago.  Same problems exist in all 3.  Eventually they should cycle through
but I wouldnt trust em all quite yet.  Logi does have a great exchange
policy though, dont even have to send back the old one.

Unfortunately the right paddle shifter won't show any sign of wear until it
suddenly simply stops working....  That's what happened to mine after 6 weeks,
and I don't consider myself a wheel "abuser".  A shame too, because the wheel
has a very nice feel to it.
