Take the CD back to the store and make them eat it. Then, leave with a new
one.

I assume you have a European version. GPL setup (and gpl.exe) checks to see
if the cd has something like 780 MB data on it. Some cd rom drives
apparently give the wrong answer and GPL won't install. In my case, it
didn't install from my 32x Aopen drive, but I was lucky it did install from
my 24x Philips drive.
Try installing on some else's computer who has a different CD rom drive to
see if the cd you got is basically ok.

The apparent size of 780 MB is a copy protection. It is done by placing 11
extra files of 50MB on the cd. The trick is that they all point to the same
data area, so there isn't really 780MB.

Well, it didn't install from my Acer 6x. Papyrus MADE me buy a new CD
drive!!! I would like to say *** YOU Papyrus, but I won't, in future I
won't buy Papyrus games, I will get pirate versions of their games in total
of what my new CD drive costed me, well no, I will be honest, in total of
what the cheapest drive would have costed me. Papyrus deserves it, they
discriminate people, US version doesn't have that 780mb shit, no CD required
in CD drive to play GPL, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I love this game, but Papyrus treats us Europeans as
criminals!

Ok. The exact data of my gpl cd:  731.545.600 bytes     697 MB
The extra files are in the 'surface' directory. There is a 55.296 KB .dat
file for every track.
After a full install, GPL is only 139 MB.
If you have the same gpl cd, maybe the firmware level of your drive is
different. Mine is reported as E-IDE CD-ROM 32X/AKU Revision ROM U10I in
Control Panel - System.

Hallelujah!!

I managed to get the program working with a no cd crack found with
astalavista!! Strange to need such a crack for a legally bought
program! It  encourages the use of warez and gamez I think.

The ROM revision number is in the properties sheet for the drive under the
settings tab (instellingen).
Another relevant difference may be the windows version we are using. I run
the original Dutch W95 update with a number of Microsoft patches applied.
I did not install the dos drivers that came with the Aopen 32x cd rom drive.
===> Something to try Dok --- using the Aopen dos drivers?
