HELP ME SPEND MY TAX REFUND

by Doug Hoo » Wed, 15 Mar 2000 04:00:00

OK after paying some bills and putting some money in the bank I have about
$1000 (US) to play with.
My current system:
PII 350
128 PC100 RAM
SBlive value!!!!
V2 SLI 12 MEG
Viewsonic PS 790 19"
MSFF wheel
8gig HD
2xDVD
Primary card Rage pro turbo AGP 2X 8MEG
FPS 2000 Cambridge Speakers

I really want to upgrade this system to the max without starting over .I can
go as high PII 450 on this motherboard. Would a 100mhz boost make that much
of a difference?

I am thinking about a GeForce DDR .Will the PII 350 be enough horsepower to
push this card? I am also looking at a Maxtor 7200 rpm 30 gig HD for $199.00
at Comp USA and possibly a CD -RW.
Any suggestions for further improvements. I spend the bulk of my time
playing Mobil1 Rally , GPL and Unreal Tournament. Thanks.

The PII 350 should push the gEFORCE with no problem but might not get the max
potential out of it.

Hello,

New video card and CPU for sure.  I just bought a WD 27.3 Gig 7200
spin and have noticed a significant boost from my 5400 spins.
Definitely go for the 7200.  I don't even have ATA66 support and the
difference is very noticeable.

If I were you though, I would save the money and do a system upgrade
in the summer.

Go to a computer show and buy a $100 15" monitor, a $25 sound card and a
pair of $10 speakers. Keep your FPS2000 speakers, your SB Live and your
monitor (keep your wheel too, I guess). Sell the rest. For $1400 you can
build a real nice computer built around your 19" monitor, speakers and SB
card.

Do you know what your mother board is,
it might be worth checking the manufacturers site
for bios updates.
You might be suprised what processor your board
might support with the latest bios,
A word of caution though, if your not abserlutly sure what your
doing when upgrading a bios, DONT.
it's not a job to be taken lightly.
