OT: MP3 Tag Utility

by Larr » Tue, 03 Dec 2002 17:39:29

All,

I need a great MP3 Tag Utility.

I don't want it to play music.  I don't want it to download music.

I just want the best MP3 Tag Utility there is.

I prefer the best FREE one available because this is a one-shot deal.  Once
I've got this mess cleaned up, I won't need it any more.  I have to correct
a bunch of 'experimentation' issues I created when I ripped the CD's, and I
don't want to have to re-rip them just to fix things up.

I own MusicMatch JukeBox Plus (I'm a lucky earlyl adopter and have full,
free upgrades for life - no upgrade subscription needed).  It has great MP3
Tagging abilities, but it only works on files you've added to the library.
It won't act on external files you haven't added yet (a serious feature-miss
that I've already requested).  I don't want to add files to my library until
I clean up the tags.

Thanks!

Larry

Use tag&rename http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm, it has a trial
period of 30 days, then you need to register.  Should be fine since
you will only use it for a one-shot deal.

MP3s have ID tags with the artist name and song title.  MP3 taggers
will rename them for you.  They will also rename the filenames
correctly if the are already id tags in the songs.  Very useful if you
are a neat freak and like having files named a certain way.

MP3 files contain information about the Author, Album, Track Number, Track
Name, etc...

The information most players display about a song come from the TAG, not the
file names.

Looks pretty good.  Oddly, though, it omits an important feature.  The
ability to batch-modify several track at once.

For example, let's say that I have an album that has 10 songs.  All to songs
have the wrong album name.  I select all 10 songs, edit the Album Name
field, and it should change it in all 10 songs.

Nope.  Just the one.  Have to do each one individually :(

That's the only fault I found, but it's unfortunately a serious one.

You can do this with tag&rename.  make sure you click the "select all"
button, it should have blue checkmark in a box.

And another thing.  I assume you were using the Multi file ID3 tag
editor option at the top of the screen too right?  This allows you to
batch rename album and artist all at once.

There was nothing I couldn't get tag&rename to do and I've tried quite
a few mp3 taggers.

I did this.  It only changed the field for the one file that I right-clicked
on to get the change dialog, not all of them.

Now THAT one I will have to re-visit.

There are an awful lot of icons on that interface :)

Thanks!
