POWER F1 - IVGA Rating - (1 Tire)

Well:

I downloaded the POWER F1 and tried it out.  On a scale
of 1 to 5 I give it (1 Tire).  The reasons are:

1).     NO SVGA MODE

it reminds me of indy 500 6 years ago.

2).     Only 2 Laps

3).     No Adjustments!!!

4).     Realizm just doesn't feel right.

It might be a great game, but I havent seen anything
close to GP2 yet..

I actually bought the game.  The full version at least addresses 1-3
above, and shows a lot of promise, but as to #4:

The control system is terrible.  It has a very large built-in dead
zone around neutral in the steering.  I'm using a thrustmaster ACM
card with T2 controller.  Adjusting the ACM doesn't help the problem.
I e-mailed EIDOS support who responded quickly and well, but their
answer was that they won't be fixing the problem.  They did offer to
exchange the game for another if my retailer wouldn't take the return.

It seems curious to omit SVGA in the demo , as most people will want
to see how it performs on their machine before buying.  Demos should
try to give an accurate impression of the final game - taking out
most of the features does not do that.

I bought Power F1 before Christmas. I agree entirely with your comment
that the steering has a large dead zone that spoils the feel of the
car.

I wonder, does your copy of the game have multiplayer support ?

The version on sale in the UK has had serial and network play removed.
3 months of mails to Eidos Tech Support and the developers Teque has
not yielded any meaningful information about a patch to rectify this
despite multiplay being promoted on Eidos and Teque web sites, in the
demo and in the game manual itself.

I found their support to be very poor - dumb messages from Eidos US
and no reply at all from the UK tech support.

Power F1 seems like a missed opportunity. Some tweaks would make it a
fine game, but Eidos seem unwilling to invest any more in it.

Yes.  The US version has multi-player support.  I have tried the IPX
mode and it seemed to work pretty well.  I believe I could really
enjoy this game (not a hard-core sim) if the dead-zone issue was resolved.
This seems like something a DOS4GW hacker could easily make a patch
for.  It's probably one number in the program binary somewhere.

I complained about the same problem...dead spot. Here's is a piece of
the third note back from EIDOS:

I have sent Teque some hardware including the ACM card.  I hope to be
able to create a patch for the problem.  There is definitely something
wrong with the way Power F1 handles the ACM card.  At least we have
narrowed it down, now we have to FIX IT!  There are numerous people
calling about the same problem, and they all have the ACM card.
Hopefully, we'll have a patch soon.

---I really hope so. Sure it's no GP2 but it is alot of fun...as long
as I don't beat myself to death *** the wheel back and forth.
Until the suppossed patch is released I get better response from a
cheap joystick rather than my GP1

The pictures on the box look great, even maybe better than GP2... but
am I hearing that the sim just isn't all there? Please, any comments
on the game (including how it would run on a lowly 486dx4).

Thanks

 Please, any comments
I have a P-100 and the game is IMPOSSIBLE to play in hi-res mode. It's
just too slow. I've packed it away until I upgrade my PC. This sucks
having a new game sitting on the shelf. My graphics card has a S3-868
with 4MB RAM.

The pictures always look great, don't they? You can't really compare
the two.  GP2 is a racing simulation. The graphics are crisp and
clear, and you have absolute control of avery little movement of your
car through the controls. Power F1 on the other hand is an arcade
racer with plenty of colorful graphics and sights, but nothing really
distinct. You are so busy trying to keep the car straight with the
sloppiest steering available (supposed to be fixed in a patch) that
the graphics are mostly a blur. The sounds are pretty good and it is
fun to fly though corners at 180 where you were doing only a hundred
in GP2. I am running a 166 with a Rendition board. I have to turn off
the 3D mirrors to get a decent (passable) framerate.  It does have a
lores mode tho. Get yourself a 3DFX and wait for Psygnosis F1. Should
be great.    -=Don=-

Well Don, You gave Sega Daytona 5 tires, even though it's a fake, and it
has only 2 laps.  What a shame to the real daytona.

Eidos UK have now sent me the patch to enable serial and network
multiplayer games in Power F1.
If any European gamers want the patch just drop me a line at

Note that I won't reply over Easter (Friday-Monday).
