I stood next to a real-life Lotus 49 on Sunday. Less than a foot away I
was! Some of the magic obviously rubbed off - I'm 5 seconds faster than
anayone ever at all the track in GPL!

So did I, I'm assuming you were also at the autosport international show at
the NEC(UK). Did you find the BRM sitting in the BAR pit garage, not sure
which year it was from but it was very similar to the one in GPL. There were
no ropes or barriers around it so you could have a good look round.Great
video of villenueve driving the brabham I just had to stand there and watch
it a couple of times.

Didnt get tickets for the thunderdrome cos I didnt pre book as I live about
10 mins from the NEC and I really wanted to see those group Bs in action :(

Hehe, yeah it was the Autosport Show. I think that Brabham in the BAR pit was
from the 1966 season, if it's the same car featured in the magazine a few weeks
ago.

I was there mainly to find out about this new Rockingham facility, but I was
there only on Sunday and the stand was a bit lame. But they were running the
final stages of the '99 Daytona 500 on video so I watched that :) I was a bit
miffed when they ran a video of the 1999 IRL (I'm not a fan) Indy 500 infront of
Tony Kanaan's Champcar! Disgraceful, IMO :)

I also got to turn the right-rear wheel of Michael Andretti's 1999 Swift Champ
Car - those cars look amazing.

If you like race cars of this era - take a trip to the Donington museum
(next to the race track). They've got a fantastic collection of cars from
all ages of racing. It's nearly always really quiet as well so you can
get really close to the cars.

Well Rob,last summer I went to a vintage racing enthusiast get together,it
was mainly sports cars.I was walking through the pits and saw the face of
God.There before me sat a Lotus 49B,Lotus 79(Mario Andretti's winning 78
season),and Michael Schumacher's F 310b.The kind folks at the Pete Lovely
Motorsports booth let the public roam around the cars, very casual for the
value of the cars. All three cars took to the track at the same time, for 4
laps around Seattle International Raceway.WOW WOW WOW!After the laps, the
cars drove back to the pits and I ran after them.Once again I was drooling
over my shoes, when one of the mechanics was cleaning up the 310b,the
steering wheel was sitting on the top of the car.I asked if I could check
out the wheel,he says sure, there you go!For 2 minutes I get to play with
Schumacher's 310B wheel,shifting gears,pulling in the clutch,turning the
dials. Then the mechanic ask for the wheel back, pops it on the car and ask's
me to help him push the car back to the stall.Needless to say my day was
complete and I left with a huge smile on my face!

P.S. Unfortunately the magic didn't rub off,and my LWFF never felt quite
the same.

That "BRM" was actually the car from the movie Grand Prix , it was under the
Pitlane section of BAR with the name James Garner above the door. It was
actually a Lotus 22 disguised to look like a BRM. I have a pic of it on
http://www.ianparker1.clara.co.uk/Dcp00083.jpg from the show, and it was
also in Motorsport magazine from January 2000.
