Is N3 supposed to crash this much?

by Taurus21 » Mon, 20 Sep 1999 04:00:00

Not the cars..... the game.
Seems the littlest things cause serious problems.
Examples:

1.) In Paint Shop, I selected the magnifying tool, then changed my mind and
clicked on it again, thinking this would de-select it.  Crashed.

2.) Again, in Paint shop, I had the rectangle tool selected, and after
finishing what I wanted to change, went to the magnifier.  Crashed.

3.) Wrecked out of a race at Dover, hit escape and watched the replay.
After I'd seen what I wanted I hit escape again, clicked no..... crashed.
After trying to replicate this I found that (at least on my system and a
friend's) whenever the race is exited while a replay is running it causes a
crash.

4.) Major wreck happened in front of me at Bristol..... looked like it had
to involve half the field  :-)
I slowed down to about 60 mph and went high to drive around it, and all of a
sudden the frame rate (which is usually mid to high 20's, even during a
wreck) dropped way down..... slowed further..... then fell even more, to
approx. 2 or 3 f/sec.  Then the system crashed.

5.) Same sort of thing as in #4 happened at 'dega.

In all cases the computer totally locked up.  I hit the Win key, tried to
[Alt]+[Tab] back to Windows, then tried giving it the three finger salute
many times, but there was *no* response from the system, and I had no
recourse but to hit the power button, and then upon restart wait as scan
disk is completed before I could get back to Windows.
Unfortunately, I get no error message to help indicate what the problem is.

Am I doing something wrong, or is N3 in need of a patch of some sort?

My system:

64MB RAM
3Dfx Voodoo Banshee w/ 16MB
Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI 64D

If anyone can help me figure out what's going on, it would be greatly
appreciated, as its getting to the point that I'm afraid to run the game
:-(

Is N3 supposed to crash this much?

Most crashes that I've heard about were due to overclocked systems, usually
the video card.

I was experimenting with my Asus V3800 non-ultra (which I rarely do - I'm
not much into overclocking) and if I pushed it too far, N3 got very
unstable.

If you are pushing things, you might want to experiment with putting them at
the factory defaults and see what happens.

I have the same problem.  If I finish a qualifying run or just decide I want
to get out of the car, I hit escape and then it locks.  It happened before
in Multi while the host was selecting a track, and happened in Multi when I
finished a Qualifying run and got second :(.

My system is:
Celeron 333 (not overclocked)
Diamond Monster Fusion 16mb Banshee PCI (not overclocked)
96mb SyncDram
A3d Sound Card

It's gotta be something with your system.  I've done pretty much everything on
your list, some of them several times, and N3 has yet to crash or lock up on me
once.  Wish I could help.

Are you shitting us with this? How exactly did N3 cause this?

Duh. Fix your system.

I've watched a few replays (to see what idiot crashed into me) and
never saw this problem.

Huh. Never happened to me.

Since I have run N3 allot and not had one crash or any other problem
(especially with other unrelated apps) I assume the problem is with
your system. That is why I think it was very unfair of you to blame
PSP problems on N3. So I flamed you a little.

Well since the original poster also has a banshee card, maybe
N3 has a problem with those???

Are you guys using the latest 3dfx drivers and Direct X 6.1?

Is N3 supposed to crash this much?

I don't have N3 yet, but I've been experiencing similar crashes with my
system.  I've got a 16 MB Creative Labs Banshee Blaster (NOT overclocked) --
I wonder if we're all seeing Banshee-related problems?

I'm using the 3dfx reference drivers at the moment, FWIW.

Shop "within" N3, not PSP.
readme.txt file may confirm this.

Yeah, the Paint Shop in the game is what I was referring to, and likely it
is my Banshee causing this, or something in my system.....

The first few times I played I had no problems, now it's crashing more
often than not.  Replay menu's are one constant source of crashing.

Count yourself lucky.  Quite a few of the races I have been in have
had people complaining about computer crashes.  Mine is crashing all
over the place (and it's not even a Microsft Game, those are cause for
crashes in and of themselves!)  In fact, this is the only game outside
of the three Microsoft games I play that crashes.  (how is it they
can't make their software work with their own software? Oh yea.. it's
a "feature"!)  I can come into the pits, it crashes.  I have had it
crash numerous times when going from the loggin menu to the
race/practice itself.  I have had it crash when going from the chat
menu or the set-ups menu.  GPL never crashed on me, nor have any other
far more power-intensive programs.  (try running Fly on the computer
and seeing just how much processing power that sucker eats when you
have all 1.6 gigs of info loaded).  Nascar 3 is the only one that
repeatedly crashes to the point that it's not even fun to play.

Actually there's nothing in the readme about Banshees.  The only 3dfx
issues are that autochat (Ctrl+F9) will disable the display, so if you
hit it by accident, hit it again to turn the display back on, and a
warning not to enable 'Force Triple-Color Buffering for Glide Apps'.  Oh
yeah, and Voodoo Rush is not supported, big surprise there.

Right. The AI was crashing all over the place at Richmond :-)
But the game itself has *NEVER* crashed on me. Pretty
weird.
