API existing say, in DirectX and addressable by all racing sim
manufacturers?

DirectPlay however seems to have hit a tangent and is IMHO digressing. True,
you can now do voice-communications through the DirectX layer which is kinda
neat and works well... but the way that they are now shifting the structure
(basic elements) of the API is actually a bit contradictory to what is
happening in "Home Network Land" these days (Router/Proxy support is taking
a HUGE hit... which is actually a VERY fast growing market in the Home
Connectivity markets).
Anyways... as I have always said before.... DirectPlay has absolutely
NOTHING over some custom Sockets based code (that has some time/testing/care
in it of course). The only advantage that DirectPlay has over sockets (again
IMHO) is that it is a "boxed API" that can be quickly implemented... which
IS important to developers in the world of demanding publishers who have
(for the most part) ridiculous deadlines and milestones.
My 2 cents (which is now worth about $1.28 US ;])
Cheers,
