<crying at the state of the tracks>

Probably the single best sim mod ever - and imho - it's trashed by the
'quality' of the tracks.

Well, the next big push from the team (apart from the early 70's mod we're
considering) is to get a lot of new tracks out.
And thanks for the kind comments Doug. The other Doug has worked wonders
given the limitations of the 2001 engine and is hard at work with the 2002
version physics.

Now THAT sounds more like it.

In a cunning move - they put a fundamentally flat track into the F12k2 demo
so we cant tell if they're still ***y awfull - but hopefully they'll ahve
thrown a few more polys into the track ( I mean, a meshsmooth in 3ds max
would do!!)

I must admit - I do like the 2k2 demo - so I'm looking forward to see what
you guys can do with it!!

Seing as we've heard NOTHING on the WSC front for a very long time, and TIR
& Race Driver both sound like they'll be fairly ***- a GT mod onto F12k2
is probably going to be the best sim that doesnt involve going round and
round and round and round in circles like N2k2

:D

LOL! So all the F1 and GT tracks are open ended? I think that all racing is
going in circles personally...some circles just aren't oval shaped. About
the only way to NOT race in circles is to drag race.

Or rally. I like the way F1 and GT tracks have lots of corners which seem to
be designed to stop overtaking :-)

Yup, forgot about segmented stage races like rally. And your other point is
a big reason a lot of US folks don't like F1, no passing. Kinds defeats the
purpose of holding the race IMO.

It's not that there can't be any passing, is that a pilot has to be very good
to pass. Provides great moments when a pilot does pass in what seemed an
impossible situation.

I recently read that modern Formula 1-cars dont use ackerman for steering.
Do F1 2001 do that?, if so, doesnt that apply to the GT-mod too?

Most race cars don't use ackerman. It's only intended for use at
low-ish speeds with tires that aren't slipping. A race car should
always be sliding at optimal slip angle around a corner, and thus
ackerman becomes somewhat unneccessary. I read that in a book once,
so I presume it's accurate :)

Damn - I think you guys should change your name to STBDT - Simply The
Best Development Team :).

When is ISI/EA going to throw some cash your way?  Your mod was the
reason I picked up F1-2001 in the first place.  I'm sure you guys have
resulted in quite a few sales.

Thanks again to SBDT for all the fantastic work!  I'm going back to
the website to drool some more :).

Kendt

PS - I'll put my vote in for the next mod being set in the early 70's
- I'm leaning ever so slightly towards a classic sportscar mod.  I'm
still hoping that GPL2 might actually happen, even though I know it
won't - NR2003 is on the front burner, I'd bet :(.

The problem is with the coverage more than anything. Here is a stat I got
somewhere, in terms of passing in F1.

Excluding:
1) The first lap
2) Passing in the pitlane
3) Passing backmarkers

Also, the overtaking car must hold the position until the end of the lap or
it doesn't count.

There were 21 on-track overtaking manouveres for position in the infamous
Austrian Grand Prix. That doesn't count the MS/RB fiasco. Jacques Villeneuve
accounted for 10 all by himself, with his best drive since '97. Throw in the
first lap/first corner shenanigans and passing during pitstops, and you will
see F1 has quite a lot of overtaking, you just don't see any of it on ITV. I
had to watch the Austrian GP on ITV (because I am away from home), and I
spent the entire race wishing I was riding on-board with JV. I might have
even missed the rigging of the result then...
