Anyone familiar with OpenFlight ?

Hello,

Right now I'm evaluating some neat piece of software that makes 3D
model out of map data for ArcView GIS. The finished landscape is
exported in the OpenFlight standard. It's the same standard our full
size car simulator use. The system is based on a 3D software probably
similar to 3DStudio called Multigen. And we will maybe buy that software.

Anyone familiar with this, and is it possible to use it for some
sim-editing ? (GPL, whatever )

Are you a GIS Guy ?

I've been developping applications in the ESRI range for 5 years....
It's a small world after all

yep, amongst other things.

I haven't done much developing for arcview, but I wrote a rather
lengthy addon for transcad as a project at the uni four years ago. But
I have demanded to my boss that I will be a part of the development
team when we get arcview 8.1 any time now.

I quit the GIS world when Arcvie was still Version3.2...

I don't know.  But I'm very curious about this stuff.

Do you have URLs or newsgroups where GIS data and software to
manipulate it is available or discussed?

                                                          Thanks

I would like to find some web and usenet resources too, but the GIS
world is still very small, and most of the users aren't into tinkering
with it, only using it and talk about it on a grand scale.

But check out www.multigen-paradigm.com for some info. For the record,
I am evaluating something called Sitebuilder 3D which creates a 3D
world based on Arcview shapefiles. It's quite funny, I've already made
a really poor model of town center :) Where the road are going
straight through houses because of the low density shapefiles. But
there are predefines textures and object models, so it is possible to
make a start from very little.

I'm so looking forward to finish my current projects and start on this
stuff full time :D

   < Snip >

Thanks Olav:

Where does the geo data for your town come from?
How much does it cost?

Which of the Multigen products are you using?
What do the charge?

Sorry about being so materialistic, sometimes it
helps to see how expensive a hobby is going to be.

We get it from the road authorities, to buy it is very expensive.

We're not using anything right now. But the cost for the main program
is around $50.000 or something. :o

Good luck :)

We used Multigen with RoadTools to make tracks for Nascar Heat and Viper
Racing.  It's expensive and a bit buggy, but very good at scenery database
management and low-poly modeling.  When we started Viper it was only
available for SGI, and the cheap O2 SGI was cheaper than the software (!),
but since they've moved it to Windows the price had come down quite a bit.

Thanks a lot for that information. Friday we received 3D Studio here
at work, and Multigen is on order. And I get to use all of it and get
paid for it at the same time :o. But with a few hours toying with 3DS
this weekend I feel that there is a massive learning curve to clear :)

For a hobbyist, the best site I know of is http://www.vterrain.org/
If nothing else, there is a good collection of links to other sites,
data sources, etc.
