Yes, You heard it right! I might be one of the first few people who has
actually played with GP2 in the US! Of course, it did help that I speak
some German, because I'm still waiting for my own English-language version
of the game. In lack of that, I played with the German version over the
weekend. (The only reason I'm writing, is just to brag about this fact.
Stop reading if You're looking for hard facts. :-)
Naturally, I played mostly on Hockenheim. I've tried to race on Ace level
(simply impossible to qualify at a good place, let alone win! :), then I
settled with Semi-Pro as a good start. I had to seriously tweak around with
the default car-settings to get better lap-times. For me it helped a lot
to see how Damon or Coulthard was driving their cars. You can imagine my
amazement when I first saw that Damon didn't switch into 6th gear until he
reached 300 km/h! (You can also tell now that I am in no way a professional
F1GP driver, rather just a semi-serious enthusiast.)
Question: does anybody know what a good setting would be for the analog
joystick with no throttle help/steering help?
The reason I ask it is this: when I turn all help options off, the game is
still trying to help me find the ideal line (just like in F1GP). However,
this annoys me like hell: I would like to take a turn where I WANT TO!
However, turning off the steering help (or whatever it's called) results in
me spinning out every second. There are two adjustable parameters there
(degree and some "damping" factor?), but so far I was unable to come up with
a decent setting. Any help on this would be appreciated (send a personal
Back to GP2: it's an awesome simulator, and the CC AI is MUCH improved over
F1GP! One time I had Schumi get on my nerves when he was trying to overtake
me and just jumped around me like hell. :-) The CC cars are also more
careful about themselves, so unless You are not doing anything stoopid, You
won't get in trouble with them (like in F1GP).
Oh, about speed: it's slow. I have a P133/Matrox Millenium (4MB)/32MB RAM,
and I have to turn off quite a few textures, most of the mirror-textures and
bring down the number of objects to "Wenig" (few) to get 19.6 fps in SVGA.
Let me tell You this: having a good fps is much more important than having a
good view out of your***pit. As I've found, anything below 19.6 fps is
unplayable. It's intersting to see, however, that GP2 will not get blocky
and won't skip frames like other simulators, but rather will try to draw
every frame - and thus slow down miserably if processor occupancy is high.
Anybody knows how to turn off the smoke? Any time I break hard (or travel
thru the gravel-trap ;) loads of smoke appear around my car and it seriously
degrades the speed of the simulation. It's especially annoying at the
starting grid when everybody is burning ***.
However, in VGA I can get all details with around 21 fps, which is pretty
cool, but once You've seen SVGA, you won't want to play in VGA any more...
;)
One last question: does anybody know why my wooden plank gets deteriorated
when I get above 320 km/h in Hockenheim? (It's pretty cool, though: I can
hear the wooden plank touch the asphalt! :) Maybe my front wing is set too
high?
Can't wait to get home and play on Hungaroring! (You see, I'm Hungarian. ;)
