As delighted as I am with GP2, I really feel that I need a bit more
power from my PC to get the very best out it. I have tried overclocking
my system, but it eventually proved to be unstable, particularly in
Windows, so I have decided to think about upgrading some components.
Money is strictly limited, and it will take me quite a while to save for
any of the parts I want. As far as GP2 is concerned, I think it is the
processor or RAM that is limiting me more so than the video subsystem -
the processor occupancy figures are high, so that should mean that the
video could cope with a bit more throughput. That certainly seemed to be
the case when I overclocked to 180MHz. Any comments on which of the bits
and pieces I have listed below give the most punch for the pound would
be most appreciated.
Current System-
===============
Intel P133 on Triton m/b (by Ten Technologies), 256kb pipeline cache
16Mb 70ns Page Mode DRAM
Tseng Labs ET4000 W32/p 1Mb video adapter
Upgrade Ideas-
==============
Faster CPU, i.e. P166 or P200
60ns Page Mode DRAMs (or EDO DRAMs?)
512kb pipeline cache
New m/b (Triton II?)
New video card (tried the Matrox Millenium & found little improvement,
also found really annoying black bands around the picture, turning my
14" monitor into a 12" monitor)
