GPL & internet telephony (a bit long)

by Tim Leighto » Fri, 09 Apr 1999 04:00:00

Hi all
A friend and I thought it would be cool to be able to talk to each other
during races, so we both downloaded MediaRing Talk 99. This works great and
is free. He's in South africa and I'm in England. The voice quality is
excellent. However when I start GPL or any other program my microphone stops
working (for the phone call, it still comes through my speakers). i get it
back if we remake the call but of course you can't do that from within GPL.
Any bright ideas as to what might be causing this and any suggested fix
would be gratefully received.
Any alternative method of achieving a "radio" link would also interest me.
More clues: My soundcard is SBLive Value, his is SB AWE64 Gold. I can always
hear him, even when I go into GPL. We did get it to work once, by forcing
half-duplex operation when the phone call was already connected, but he then
had to race GPL with no game sound (I had game sound). Half duplex is no
solution because you have to click on a button to talk.
Hope this is of interest to some boffin out there!
Thanks
Tim

Try RogerWilco...its at www.rogerwilco.com, although make sure you have
enough bandwidth for both GPL and the voice utility.

Yeah right, guess you and JoHS will never get to try it then, I can't
see him dumping his beloved Gravis Ultrasound in favour of a Live card
:-)

Try Battlecom.  It works very well however you will need to turn down the
volume for game sounds Otherwise the wonderful ROAR of the engines will
drown out conversation.  BC works with all full duplex cars wich the AWE64
should be.

My humble opinion
