Doing a sort-out the other day I came across a scratched old CD in a
drawer. Turned it over and saw it was "Virtual Karts", and remembered
just what a waste this game was.

I waited months for this game after seeing a preview in a magazine
(which also featured GP2 preview that issue!) but it was such a
disappointment when I finally played it.

Despite excellent graphics and atmosphere, and being an attempt at a
"serious" kart sim, it was let down by poor physics and an obscure
control system. I haven't played it in 2 years now. It wasn't *that* bad
but it could have been so much more.

A real shame, as it could have been one of the best and most popular
sims around :-(

Did anyone else ever try it?

Yes I have a similar Cd in my "archive" in the garage.

Agree with everything you have to say about it.

I also remember a spokesperson from Papyrus explaining how the GPL engine
just needed to have the correct parameters input to simulate any type of
vehicle - if ever there was the potential for a decent karting sim I would
have thought the GPL engine could provide it (amongst many other classes of
motorsport).

Now that to me is the wasted potential of the 90s :-(

It is a true dilemma - as the best current on-line racer if the physics
engine is ever hacked it would be a killer - yet it could offer so much if
new cars and the appropriate physics could be developed by the sim community
as with SCGT etc.

Imagine Lotus Cortinas around Crystal Palace :-)

How many times would I have paid Papyrus for add on GPL pack - if only...

I would have bought whatsoever made on the GPL engine... And I really
have bought quite a number of driving "sims" after GPL; Usually those
have been only lousy games; they came and went off from my HD. It really
is kind of hard to understand, why Sierra did not even try to make
more profit by GPL. Well, I am eagerly waiting for the N4! The demo
is really good. But I guess Sierra is going to vaste that, too?
Hope not!

Well if so, we can just ignore the release and play the N4 demo until the N5
demo comes out. :)

I have it as well, I had it on a 486, slow loading, worked better on a P166
mmx but is old hat now.
Any one want a copy?
I have Super Karts as well, remember fatal racing, what about Screamer!  The
king was GP2 in fact it might still be better than GP3 on a pro rata come
year basis.
