Pod Patch Mirrors?

Pod Patch Mirrors?

by Paul Grunwa » Wed, 07 Jan 1998 04:00:00

I've been trying to download the Pod 3Dfx patches for three days now
from ftp.ubisoft.com  - what a useless exercise.

Are these patches, specifically updatePOD21_3dfx.exe.

Are there any mirror sites with faster than a 300 baud modem
attached?

TIA,
P.

Just for your information, when someone clicks on to the link for the
pod patch, a secretary at ubisoft starts typing in the code of the patch
and it is broadcast charcater by character to your computer.  The
secretary types 40 words per minute.  Not bad at all.

Take a look at the german ubisoft site: www.ubisoft.de
There you can find the same patch, divided into pieces of 1,5 Megs each.

It took me a week of trying to download the patch while I was sleeping at
night before it finally downloaded it right.  The first few times it timed
out.  And even when it WAS downloading...it did it at less than 1kb per
second.  Usually i get 3-4 kbs.  So just keep trying I guess and eventually
it will work.  It is worth it.

you should try qball's POD webpage
I can't remember the URL but it is in gamecenter underground/community/pod
the 3dfx downloads are even smaller than the original

Again, if you know how to use FTP, file size doesn't matter.  FTP has a built
in resume command that a lot of people don't seem to know about, none of the
web browsers are aware of, and even some of the cheezy FTP clients neglect to
support (and a few other FTP clients require you to register before using this
basic core FTP command).

Try at various times.  I downloaded it from there..  First time, I was getting
0.5k/sec, which is pretty ridiculous.  I aborted (but kept what I downloaded,
so I could resume the transfer) and tried again later, and was able to get
about 3.5k/sec..  Not great, but it's fairly decent for a 45Kbps connection.

The key is KEEP WHAT YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED.  And of course, don't use a web
browser to download large FTP files.  That's just plain stupid, especially if
you're using one of the 4.0+ browsers, which are unstable enough that they
tend to crash periodically for no reason, and are too FTP-impaired to know how
to keep and resume file transfers.  When FTP'ing large files, always use a
REAL ftp client (you can copy the URL easily from Netscape to an FTP client),
and if you need to, download the file in steps.  Download, cancel, resume,
cancel, resume..  I've had very good luck with resuming FTP transfers.  Never
has resuming a transfer corrupted one of my downloads (it seems about as
stable as Zmodem resume, for the few people left who remember what things like
"BBS, Zmodem, Xmodem, Ymodem, and HS/Link" actually mean).

QBall's site has a link to UbiSoft's web site for the version 2.1 updates.
None of them are available for download directly from his site.

You should at least have been fair to mention a few. :)
There are: ncftp for Linux (available at any sunsite mirror)
CuteFTP, FTPWolf for Windows (both shareware - try
www.shareware.com)
not to mention good ol' FSP - for those who still remember it.

*AD ON*
As for the patches to POD - all of them are available at the site in my
.signature
And since my files are mirrored worldwide, you should be able to find a
location next to you with more decent speed.
