Settle Down, Everyone...

To All on R.A.S.:

I have tried this before, but to no avail.  One last time.  We all need
to stop this bickering over the "best" racing simulation (which usually,
99%, winds up with mindless personal attacks) and concentrate on what is
being released right now.

Yes, NASCAR Racing has its flaws.  Yes, IndyCar Racing has its bugs.
Yes, NASCAR Racing 2 has its shortcomings.  Yes, IndyCar Racing II has
its deficiencies.  Yes, Grand Prix 2 has its share of all.  But they are
ALL great games/sims, and that's why so many people even on this
newsgroup have bought one or more of them, and are satisfied.  Wanna
race stock cars around a high banked oval?  NASCAR Racing (or '2').
Looking for the thrill of 240mph shooting about Indianapolis?  IndyCar
Racing (or '2' as well).  How about sliding through a European chicane
in a V12 powered racer?  Grand Prix 2 is there.

Look.  There are many simulators being released right under our noses,
and their producers are hoping we'll tear our eyes away from this screen
to see what they're like.  Why don't we give other, new sim writers a
chance instead of moaning over the regretted purchases of crappy games.
It's all point-of-view.  You could get a thousand people to say Grand
Prix 2 is beta, unfinished, total crud, and that Geoff Crammond should
be drug out into the street and shot (to quote Garfield).  Then you
could get a thousand people that will tell you Grand Prix 2 is
groundbreaking, tremendous, the best F1 racing game yet, etc.  Is there
an end?

No.

Don't you think Geoff Crammond himself is reading this newsgroup and
seeing what chaos he's brought about?  He's got our money, as do
Papyrus, Psygnosis, Electronic Arts, and all other racing sim makers.
Close your eyes and imagine Crammond laughing hysterically at the little
children having temper tantrums.  Do you like this image?  If not, DON'T
BUY MICROPROSE GAMES ANYMORE.  Simple as that!  Try something else.
Power F1.  Starting Grid.  Sega Rally Championship.  Or go back to old
greats like F1GP, Indy 500, and Test Drive III.

My point is:  If you buy a carton of 2% milk, and don't like the taste
but still want 2% milk, try another brand!  Don't give up on milk
altogether!  And don't walk around the store insulting everyone who has
that brand in their shopping cart!

Respond in whatever ways you wish.

order.

SNIP!

Well said. Somehow I doubt if people will listen though. Myself I think
some of the people beating a dead horse with a stick spend too much time
posting when they should be driving sims ;-)

Cheers.

Unfortunately, John, you are preaching to the deaf, showing to the blind
and *** a dead horse....all those metaphors :-)

The RAS, by it's very nature, will only ever consist of a tiny minority of
all those across the world who buy racing simulations and, as is seen in
everyday life, a hard-core minority group usually tends to be very vocal
and individually focused.

I can assure you that the bean-counters with the major entertainment
software companies pay little heed to the outpourings of such a clique when
the money is raining in from the majority who go to their retailer, buy the
game and remain forever completely anonymous.

Of a survey taken (locally) late last year of customers for racing sims,
less than 11% had any intention of playing the game either "on-line" or
with an "off-line" league and less than 3% had ever heard of the RAS.  Of
those surveyed, more than 70% used the internet.

Conclusion:
If I were a software developer I would be more concerned about feed-back,
good or otherwise, through the customer-retailer-wholesaler-distributor
channel than through anything I might read on the RAS.

What can we say more...
I think people like you should post more frequently.  I personnaly was
the "Pole Position is the best sim" :)  type of person two months ago.
That's when I realize that each of them has it's personnal touch that
makes them unique.  I hope that the new F1 sims coming out in 1-2 months
will be each unique in their style (hope they will be SIMS not ARCADE
[-:).  So you're now an official cool guy of r.a.s.

Good race at the Brickyard, (Old'Indytrack guy in rec.autos.simulators)
