Did anyone ever try to configure the modem strings in
ICR 1.04 or 1.05 to run at a raw speed of more than 9600
baud? And if yes - does it make any difference?

You might be able to get the modems to connect at 14,400, but the program is still
going to setup the serial port to 9600.  This will work, but you won't get any real
benefit from it.  The transfer between CPU and modem will still be no more than
9600 bps.

BTW, you should say 9600 bps, not 9600 baud.  9600 bps modems actually transmit at
2400 baud.

Yes and no.

Yes, I am able to connect with strings that specify 14,400

No, the game still connects at 9600.  Best connection is still .07 seconds.

I have two 'puters here linked by null cable. Connection is still .07
seconds. There is no noticeable difference between direct connect and
9600 modem play. I think the 9600 modem play is fine, smoother than DooM
at the same speed.

.07 is the optimum reading you're gonna get.  We've done the null modem
connect too and that is the limit.  Very smooth.  It's the modem connection
that changes a lot depending on line noise.  Sometimes as bad as .40 and THAT
SUCKS.
