GPL - A bit too real for some.................

My girlfriend came out to my place this weekend for the first time (we live
about 2 hours apart), and she wanted to take a look at this "racing game"
I've told her about.  She used to live in Monaco, so she wanted to take a
look at her old stomping grounds in GPL.

So, I created a new player for her, driving the BRM with all the help on,
and she did a slow tour of the circuit, marveling at the realism - she
exclaimed "I know EXACTLY where I am!" as she passed through *** Square
and down the hill to  Mirabeau.

Unfortunately, just like in real life, she started to get car sick after 1
lap and couldn't go any further:)  She's thinking about trying again, but
with the help of Dramamine...........

About the car sickness part...

A friend of mine got sick from a virus, that "attacks" the balance
nerves(?) in the inner ear.

I can tell you it was a lot of fun watching him trying to drive GPL.

His face got greener and greener, until after about a minute he had to
rush out to the bathroom.

Things do get a little to real sometimes!

I can sympathise....I am fine with racing sims, but 5 minutes of a Quake or
Doom type game & I am feeling distinctly unwell! Was fine until I played too
much Doom II a few years ago!   - An affliction I've christened "Doom-eye"

Interesting, I lost my ability to play these games at about that same
time also! I can't even play Descent anymore.

Yes, I had a bad period with that. Some years ago I tried Wolfenstein;
got sick in under 5 minutes!
Halflife caused this problem for me, but just after an hour or so, but
the feeling was bad just the same.
Motion sickness, strangely enough I can almost feel myself getting
sick just *thinking* about playing the game. Must un-Pavlov myself,
for I am too much conditioned to feel sick, so I can't see if it's
real of phsycological anymore.
It's just a bit better nowadays. GPL has to be played so smoothly you
don't have the effect, unlike Quake where you have to swerve, sway and
sprint so the motions are TOO fast.

GPL - A bit too real for some.................

All my friends laugh when I tell them about this, but I've seen
passing references in print before. I first got it with Wolfenstein
3D. One comment I read hypothesized that it was due to non-exact
rotation matrices being used in computations, which makes the walls
not behave quite right, which I guess the eye picks up on.

For me, the nausea is worse if I'm watching than if I'm playing. The
first time I ever saw Doom, I was watching a friend play, and I got
sick within about 30 seconds. As a result of that, I haven't played
many other first person games. I was able to get through Dark Forces,
though I occasionally felt twinges, especially when I was trying to
speed through the demo before the real game came out. Jedi Knight was
better; I had almost no problems. Looking up and then rotating was a
problem. When you do that, you can clearly see that something's not
quite right in the way things are moving.

There's definitely a psychological aspect to it, too. In the November
PC Gamer, there's a Doom screenshot (50 Best Games article), and my
stomach took a jump when I first saw it. I think it's probably
psychology that got me through the Star Wars games, too.

I also get sick very quickly looking at microfiches. It feels like my
eyes are trying to track the words as they move. I have to make myself
look at the carriage and not the screen every time I slew more than a
page or so.

Ob ras: I've never had any problems with any driving games, though my
eye often notices that something's not quite right in the way the
background moves at Monaco (the horizon image of the hill, not the
trackside objects).
