NT 2003 Tire Model

Gahhhhhhh.

I don't remember who said the tire model in NT 2003 was more
realistic, but I just ran a 50% race at Atlanta to test it out.

Fuel lasted about 60 laps.  Tires, which I was running *over 300
degrees* weren't even yellow at that point.  I guess WC teams don't
change tires more than once every other pitstop?

Some more observations that I didn't make earlier but are seriously
pissing me off the more I play this:

1. The AI braking before the start/finish line when a yellow is
thrown.  I enabled auto pace lap because I noticed earlier that they
came to a complete stop under caution immediately after taking the
yellow, I just didn't notice that at some tracks they do it exiting
turn 1 before crossing the line.  Nice way to pick up 10 spots at
Bristol.  Even with auto pace lap on, the AI regularly slams my car
into the wall or another car after taking control of it.  There's
something hilarious about taking the yellow flag and seeing Jeff
Gordon and Tony Stewart doing a synchronized spin through the infield
after the stripe.

2. The AI laptimes drop by a full second as their tires wear.  WTF.
At Atlanta they run about 30.5 for 30 laps, then suddenly they're
turning 29.5.  Great AI.  At Bristol they barely crack 17 until near
the end of a fuel run when they're doing 15.5's.

It's quite obvious it's really a F1-2002 Mod. The AI is doing a couple of
fast laps a'la Schumacher before pitting :-)

Grand Prix teams used the same set of tires for a full week of
practice, qualifying, and racing in 1967.  I'm not saying they didn't
wear or damage, but still, having no tire wear in GPL is a little more
acceptable than in a modern nascar sim.

The latest issue of the Sporting News has a full page complaining about
the lack of racing in Nascar,  (drivers can catch the leader, but can't
pass)  They blamed this on the HARD tires Goodyear is supplying.
Also on CART.com Mo Nunn has called for going back a couple of
generations in tire construction to improve the ontrack racing.  The current
Bridgestones just don't wear either.

so at least for a fuel run, tire modeling doesn't seem so important
these days.

Weird.  Any time I've watched a NASCAR race in the past 5 years the
teams have complained about how badly the tires wear...

Didn't Cooper's interview discount this ?  Thought he said the tires wore
out just fine, but can't remember the details.

Pfffft.......it's because the cars are F1 with roofs <g> When the drivers
whine about minor dents screwing up their aero package, somethings wrong
with the state of stock car racing.

Nascar's a joke these days anyway.  Great quote in Speedway Illus this
issue by Sammy Packard.  "Stock car racing used to be a garageman's hobby.
Now it's a rich man's sport."

  Real racing ?  Local tracks.

That has been true in the past, but Goodyear has produced a very long
wearing tire since last year.  (The Rousch cars never did find a workable
setup last year for the new tires)
Same for CART.  Bridgestone has come up with a tire compound that lasts
and lasts.   Both companies were trying to acheive a reduction in marbleing
and a cost savings.  The harder tires provide good grip and don't go off
very much.  Just a few years ago at some of the more abrasive tracks, it was
common for a backmarker on new tires to blow by the leader with great ease.
Fresh tires were worth several seconds per lap compared to worn out skins.
But now days....they just keep going...
