FINALLY - I OVERCLOCKED MY PCU

by NYR21199 » Sun, 11 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I have finally done it. I over clocked my P-133 to a P-180.  I could have had a
P-200 but the system kept crashing when i tried it so I had to stay at a P-180
In the process, I lost a jumper in the case, but everything seems to be fine.
I tested ICR2 & the N2 demo  with my new config:
p-180,  80 ram, 1 mb graphics card, 3 hardrives, 24X CD-ROM, win 98

here are the results. I ran ICR2 in SVGA mode with full graphics. There was
such a drastic improvement even with the grass & asphalt textures on. It was
insane.
I then tried the N2 demo with all graphics turned off, and it still sucked. The
frame rate was still unnaceptable.

Anyone else have similar or bad experiences, with overclocking? I'd like to
hear about it.

Anyway, I would liek to thank all the people in this newsgroup who have
explained the process. Thanx.

not many new programs are going to kickarse with a 1meg graphics card. When
N2 first came out, my p133 and 4meg graphics card was acceptable(16meg ram
bla bla bla). With a 3dblaster PCI, framerate was flawless. No matter the
speed of your cpu, if u have a bad video card you will always get bad
framerates..

maybe so in N2 - But not in ICR2. Even in SVGA mode, ICR2 is smooth with full
graphics.

 Hey bud,
Congrats on the succussful overclocking. I did notice one thing in your post
however, N2 will run dandy on a 166 with plenty of RAM. That said, your _1meg_
video card has got to go! I haven't seen anything smaller than 4meg vid cards in
quite awhile. Heck, you could pick up a cheap one for less than fifty bucks. Better
yet, find an original V1000 Rendition 4meg card like an Intergraph and be prepared
to be blown away. I suspect your framerate problems have nothing to do with
processor speed, but lack of video RAM. Try out a new vid card and you may be very
impressed with your "new" computer <ggg.> All the best, Mike

N2 seems to be strange this way. I went from a P75 and 8 meg ram to a 166
and 48 meg with little or no noticable difference in frame rate.  I also
added a monster3d recently and the 3dfx patch helps a bit, but still there
is very little difference.

The main thing that helped N2 on my P166 was going to a Rendition V1000
based card and using the -4 -dma parameters. I went from very few cars
drawn ahead and some details turned off, to 20 ahead and all detail on.
I am one of those 30fps or it sucks kind of people, which is why GPL
isn't on my computer yet.

Yeah, but it's *only* SVGA (256 colors).  If you got a Rendition
V1000 card, you'd be getting 30 fps (or higher in turbo mode :) *and*
getting 16-bit color (65K colors).  And it would help NASCAR2.  And
since they're probably going for about $50 nowadays, it's the best
bang-for-the-buck investment you can make for those two sims (and
SODA).  I've had a Intergraph Reactor/Intense 3D in my P133 for close
to two years and have been very happy with the graphics and frame rate
(until GPL made me upgrade).  You may think some of us are raving, but
you won't believe it until you try it.  Take a look around for some of
the older ICR2 sites to see if you can get screenshots that show the
difference (and only begin to tell the story).

There's just one problem with this. In the original proccess of overclocking
the cpu, I kinda lost a jumper which I would need to change it again. There is
no more available room in my cpu case.

I guess I'll just have to get a new cpu at the end of the year.
