Jul 2002:

I shouldn't worry about it. It goes with words like "Cabal", "kook"
and "sockpuppet" in the "words that have weird alternative meanings
on Usenet that no normal person could possibly guess" category. I
think there's a jargonbuster about somewhere, but I can't be bothered
to look it up...

Try googling for:

+usenet +meow

http://www.gwu.edu/~trivia/meow.html seems to have a pretty good chronology.
(more text than I could be bothered reading, actually!)

...though not why there was a NG called alt.fan.karl-malden.nose in
the first place! (No, I don't know either, as I've never heard of Mr
Malden.)

Karl Malden is an actor.  He is well known for his big nose.  Originally,
the newsgroup existed for that purpose (as some sort of running joke), and
it was invaded by the kooks and freaks of the Usenet.  That, and multiple
other newsgroup.  One famous is the Collegial football newsgroup, a great
place for cross-posting.

Anyway, if you people want to see some action, check out alt.bad.clams

There's another one... but if you want *real* weirdness, try
alt.sysadmin.recovery - but *don't* post there unless you know exactly
what you're getting into, and probably not then.
