I know this has been hashed out a thousand times on RAS but I'm still
confused.  I need some advise.  I currently have a PII-350 with a 4meg
NVidia card.  I play a lot of NFS, Nascar and GPL.  What would be the
best add-on card to bring up the frame rate and improve the graphics.
I'm used to running a Rendition card and miss the clarity.  I have a
DVD too if that makes any difference.

Sounds like 3Dfx Voodoo2 would be the card for you.
The price dropped, and the 12 meg cards are a good value now.
As long as you have a free PCI slot, you can have great 3D from it,
and also go back to using your Rendition card as a combo 2d/3d if you
choose.
Although I'm guessing your first generation Riva is AGP, you really
aren't giving up much by going to the PCI Rendition card.

The Rendition version of N2 isn't even by the Voodoo cards.
They'll just pass it through like it was 2d.
I'm not sure how GPL  handles it, since I don't have a Rendition card
in my 3Dfx equipped box anymore. I presume it'll just let you select
which display driver you want to use.
All 3 of your main games are also 3Dfx accelerated if you choose.
NASCAR2 via a patch.

I have an STB Black Magic (Voodoo2), and an STB Velocity 4400 (Riva
TNT). If I had to give up one or the other I'd give up the TNT.
The 3Dfx is a more well-rounded choice.

Hey, no problem.  I appreciate the reply.  One more question though.
If I install an accelerator will I still have the clear graphics that
the rendition card had?
TIA

Yes. There was an issue with the original Voodoo (1) cards causing
some funky lines and stuff in 2D at resolutions 1024x768 and up.
There were other issues having to do with the quality of the
pass-through cables some companies used.

As far as I know, these issues are all solved with the Voodoo2.
I have no problems with my 2D display at 1024x768.
Other than when the Voodoo is being used, it has no effect on your
display. Rendition Nascar2 and GPL will look exactly as they do
without the Voodoo connected.

Ok thanks!  But just to clarify.  I won't be running the Rendition
card.  Just my nVidia and whatever add-on card I decide on.
So I won't be running in Rendition mode.

I have both a 3Dfx and Rendition card, and for N2 the Rendition is far
superior, no question. The 3Dfx patch works, but it just isn't the same, in
appearance or framerate. In NR 1999 the 3Dfx is a ton better. GPL looks
better with the Rendition, and the framerate is a little better than my old
Voodoo I. I'm not sure about a V2, but the V2X00 is better (for these
titles) than a V1.

Ok thanks.  That's what I was needing to know.  Thanks to Tim also for
helping me out!

It's sounding like the new ATI Rage Fury is _the_ card to have...

The VII runs 1024x768 max (two VII in SLI too), so you're
using a TNT?

He's referring to the V2 not causing artifacting on the 2D display at
high res, which the other poster said he was experiencing.
I'm running at 1024x768 2d, and I'm not seeing any artifacting from my
V2.
