seems like theres a lot of petrol heads here so

Ive noticed that the universal joint yokes  in steering columns do not line
up like they would in prop shafts and pto shafts.
What is the reason behind this and is there a mathematical way to find out
which way they should be refitted if the steering column and u/js have
already been removed

Steve,

I think...  it will be because the steering wheel shaft, where they are
using the Ujoints, is more of a flexible joint for adapting (modifying) the
direction centerline of the shaft, like Tilt wheels do, all the way down to
the box...  if you have more than 2 joints in any length of shaft though, at
some point there has to be a bearing fixing the position of the shaft, or
things go whacky...
