F1GP2 Tyre Selection - HELP!

by Boll » Sun, 21 Jul 1996 04:00:00

If this is a ***y obvious question then sorry but I simply cannot change my
tyre set on F1GP2. I am always stuck with the set meant for racing and thus end
up qualifying with my racing tyres.
Can anyone tell me how to use a different set other than r1, r2, r3 and r4?
I have gone into the selection mode on the LCD display and wiggled my joystick
in every possible direction but to no avail.

There is no such thing as qualifying tires. They have been banned for some time know
and teams also have a limited set of tires over a GP weekend.

Let's understand what he is asking.  He knows, as you and everybody else
does, that he only has 7 sets of tires.  The game would seem to break it
down to Q1, Q2, Q3, R1, R2, R3, R4.  Obviously you don't want to use Q
tires (not the gummy ones, but the designated set) during the race as you
will have probably flat spotted them or unbalanced them in some form.

All he is asking is how to get to Q1 and not R1.

Simple question, I thought.

All he has to do is use the brake or gas pedal to move the
blinking cursor to the set of tires that he wants and then
hit the fire button or gear shift.
In the***pit it will let you know how many laps you have
on the active set of tires.

Maybe, but the problem is getting to the r1/2/3/4 tyres - took me some
time to work that one out.....

To original poster - use the brake / accelerator to move between the
1/2/3 and r1/2/3/4 sets. If you _did_ mean "where's the special sticky
tyres", then they were banned at the start of the 1994 season (or
earlier than this? - the manual doesn't give any info on tyres amongst
all the other stuff in appendix H)

I read a note that stated that now they only bring one compound type to
the F1 races. I do NOT know if this is true, but it would explain why
you only have a choice of tire sets, and not tire compounds.
I would imagine that this is the explanation, as I can not see where
Geoff would have "forgotton" how to put in different compounds, the
original did have it..

Use the accelerator and brake to move up and down between the groups.
You should have a display like

  0   0   0
r1  r2  r3  r4

Moving left and right selects the set, and up and down moves between
race and practice/qual sets. Fire sticks 'em on your car. If you leave
only two race sets, and have a disaster and pit more than once, the set
of tyres with the LEAST WEAR will be put on your car when you pit (when
you have no unused race sets left).

I don't think this was explained in the manual, but it came from the
folks who wrote it so I guess it's right :)

Cheers!
John

Thanks for the help guys. The problem is that the manual isn't written very
well. It should point out that the three figures above r1,r2 and r3 are the
practice and qualifying tyres. I thought that these numbers related to the
number of laps driven on the race tyres.

Since Goodyear has been the only tire manufacturer in F1 for some years
now, the qualification compounds have vanished. They are, however, not
banned. When Bridgestone returns next year, and Michelin and others may
follow, we'll probably see special qualification compounds again. The FIA
is already thinking about how to prevent another "tire war".
Goodyear brings only tires of one compound to a race, and additionally
normal rain and the new monsoon tires.

Ah right - my mistake. I had just assumed that with all the money at
stake that the Williams, Bennetons & Ferraris of this world would have
insisted on having special qualifying compounds if they weren't
banned.

Thanks for the info.

The FIA have already banned Q tires, as well as multi-compound tires for
next year. they
will also reserve the right to pick which tires each team gets (within
brand of course). There
is great concern  about increased cornering speeds so they are trying to
control the development.

Ok, it is a bit confusing... You're probably not using those r tyres
even if you think you are. You have three qualifying sets and four
race sets... From the beginning it looks kinda like this :

  0  0  0

  r1 r2 r3 r4

The zeros do not indicate number of racing sets used, but are in
fact the qualifying tire sets. If you do one lap you'll get

  1  0  0

  r1 r2 r3 r4

So this does not mean you've driven 1 lap with the r1 tyres but one
lap with the first set of qualifying tyres. Now, if you use the cursor
to go down and select r1, you'll find it shows a zero, indicating it
has not yet been used. So you just use the three upper tire sets,
indicated by three zeros at first, and then take for example the r4
set if you run out of tyres. In the race, the first set used will
be r1, then r2, then r3, then r4 so if you use one set of race tyres
for qualifying it makes sense to use the r4 as it is least likely
to be used in the actual race...

Did I overcomplicate matters ? :)

the manual says that U have to save some NEW tyres for the
race...looks like 4 sets(for up to 3 pitstops).

I too have been able to use only 3 sets in practise and
qual....bummer!

When you enter the tyre selection on the LCD, just use your controller to
move up and down the tyre sets. On the top row are your qualifying tyres:
1, 2, and 3. On the bottom row are your race tyres, r1, r2, r3, and r4.
Just use your controller to move the cursor onto the tyres you want and
press your selector - then drive off on your new tyres.

Hi,

there is no other tire set available....the program is choosing the right
one for you like A, B, C, D !!!!! The upper three ones are for the
qualify r1 r2 r3 r4 for the race.
I got this information direct from Microprose!!!

Got laps........Andreas!
