this morning, disconected the batery for awhile but that did nothing.
i just know there is some secret button mashing that might do the trick.

Umm, Neil, that little light could be nothing, or a very expensive
something......If you were to have someone scan for whatever fault codes are
stored in the computer, you could start to figure out what caused the light
to light in the first place, and do something about it. You'll need to find
someone with a code scanner. I believe that after the codes are read, it
resets the computer. I've heard that places like Autozone will scan your
vehicle for free, figuring that you will then pickup the parts from them.
All alse fails, a small piece of black tape can cover that pesky light for a
really long time, like in my '78 El Camino, some diode failed somewhere
which caused the generator light to come on, but the charging system still
operated normally, soooo...... a 1" piece of tape "fixed" it for the next
10-12 years or so, it was no doubt still lit when I sold it.

Most likely you've got a bad O2 sensor (there are 3-4 on that truck), a
faulty fuel injector (GM had problems with those years), or an evap system
leak (possible loose gas cap).
If the problem is relatively serious (fuel control related) and you ignore
it, you could damage the catalytic converter internally which will cost big
$ and won't be covered under warranty if you neglected the check engine
light for a period of time.
If your check engine light ever flashes consistently, get the vehicle to a
shop **NOW** or park it. A flashing check engine light means that there is
a major fuel control system failure and catalytic converter damage can
result very quickly.
Hope this helps,
