rebates

My luck with rebates averages about 85%. My luck has improved since I
started making sure I copy everything and use registered, return receipt
mail. That way I have a backup. But as a rule I have decided to avoid
rebates - the hassle of following up when the vendor doesn't respond is too
much. Case in point is Computer City and NewCom - still have rebates worth
$30.00 outstanding from these vendors. Been waiting since from last
Christmas. Newcom has not responded to phone calls, e-mails, and a regular
mail letter that included copies of all information. Of course Computer City
is a lost cause. Now I figure if the product is a real dog it will go away,
if it is still decent, the price will be lower in the stores in 30 - 60
days.

It's a rip - avoid it if you can.

Hi,

Rebates  ( longish )

I bought a Diamond Stealth2 S220 the other day, printed the rebate coupon
from Diamond's site, and then read in these ngs about your odds of
actually getting the rebate. The stealth ( Rendition V2100 ) may have
proven to be the most bang for the buck ( 40$ after the rebate ) for
something
like GPL, even if it's not the best card for GPL.

However, instead of commenting about it's qualities today, I returned it.
Why ?  Well if the rebate doesn't come, then it's not such a good purchase.
I think it's a shame that in this country, I had to make this kind of
decision,
because of so many people expressing their frustrations getting these
rebates.

I mean a lot of you actually compared this rebate scheme to a scam. Is it
really
this bad ? I didn't intent to find out the hard way, so back it went.

Are you listening Diamond ? I sure wish I could tell all about how good this
card run's GPL. Why don't you just lower the price right off the bat, or
have the retailer send in the invoices or whatever and let him recover
the rebate ?

So I'm still shopping for that elusive card. Saw a Creative Voodoo2,8MB,
yesterday, 127$ + a coupon for a 50 $ rebate, at Costco. I hesitated a bit,
but then what about Creative's reputation with rebates ? Haven't got a clue
.

Any of you can vouch for Creative Labs ?

It seems that all the cards I was considering for GPL, Diamond's Viper550,
Stealth2, Voodoo2, the new Fusion, or Creative's Banshee or Voodoo2, all
offer a nice mail in rebate. So how do you choose, not knowing if the rebate
is really going to come back from this guy but may come back from the other
guy?  You roll the dice ?

It shouldn't be like this at all. This ain't Russia.

By the way, any of you tried the Stealth2 with GPL ? How does it compare to
a Voodoo2, 8 Mb ?, or to a Banshee ?

Many thanks for any info.

Twice in the past year, once with stealth2 and once with Monster
voodoo2 they screwed up and sent 2 yes 2 rebates for each product.
Took about 4 months after each purchase and phone calls and faxes
but I got 2 checks for stealth and 2 for a Voodoo2 card.

I agree companies that offer rebates should reduce the price at the
register.  I read in PC World that only around 4% of rebates are
redeemed.  However, I have redemeed over $350 U.S. in rebates in the
last two years.  If you look at the rebate slips most companies list a
1-800 or 1-888 telephone number you can call if you have not received
the rebate within the usual 6-10 weeks.  Yes, I have had to call Sony,
Thrustmaster, and Maxtor, however I did receive my rebate the
following week.  You should always make a photocopy of the receipt (if
an original was required), UPC code, and rebate slip.  I have received
rebates from the following companies:

Sony
Maxell
Fuji
TDK
Thrustmaster
CompUSA
Maxtor
ATI
Diamond
Kingston
ActionTel
Labtec
Gravis
