Strange lockups

I need some help.  I am using Windows 98 on a Celeron at 950 mhz with
256 meg of RAM and a Radeon 32 DDR with the 9013 drivers.  Oh yeah, SB
Live 5.1 also.  I have been getting lockups where games will freeze, but
the audio will continue looping.  This does not happen in all games.  So
far, it only happens in NR2002 with the latest patch and in the JGTC mod
for F1 2001.  Everything else runs fine.  NR2002 ran fine before
patching.  F1 2001 unmodded, or with the FIA or ALMS mods, also runs
fine.  But the way that NR2002 and the JGTC mod fail is identical - a
screen freeze, looping sound, no control or keyboard response, hard
reboot required.  Anyone have any ideas?

Strange lockups

I'm using D3D for NR2002.

I tried using the old NR2002 executable again.  It no longer works.  It
did work the first time I tried it after patching, which was before I
had run the new executable.  After running the new executable, neither
works now, which implies to me that the new executable changed something
in an .ini file that caused the crashes.

Only similar crash I have had that I have been able to fix was in
Dungeon Siege.  It crashed or rather locked up the same way until I
turned off EAX in the game.  Do you have an SBLive?

Also the original FIA mod used to crash this way, but version 2 does
not.  I believe that problem was said to be due to a problem with a wave
file.  Sound card again.  When I get some more time to fool with it, I'm
going to try turning down audio acceleration.  This has been said by
other people to be a problem with SBLive cards.  If you have an SBLive
you might want to try that.
