Gran Turismo 3 - a couple of questions

by Whodagu » Sat, 28 Jul 2001 01:50:49

I am a Gran Turismo ***.

Gran Turismo is not a simulation in the way GPL is, but the games have
provided hours of fun with no headaches. Consider that I spent $360 for the
PSX2/GT3 bundle with a memory card, which is about what it would cost me to
upgrade my aging overclocked Celeron 850/Voodoo3 PC to a 1Ghz P3 and some
flavor of GeForce - which is the max the mainboard will take and is already
out of date.

On to my questions:

How does the Logitech wheel for the PSX2 compare to the original LWFF for
the PC,  and does it improve your lap times - or slow you down?

What other games - racing or otherwise - would you recommend for the PSX2,
and why?

Thanks in advance,
Whodaguy

I have not used the wheel. There are a couple of good racing "games" for the
PS2, My favorite is F1 2001 CS (by EA). It's a very fun F1 game (GPL'ers
need not bother with it though). MotoGP is a cool motorcycle game also. It's
got nice graphics and probably the most realistic physics I've seen in a PS2
game. I would not bother with Ridge racer 5, unless you really like sliding
around every corner.

An 850?  You poor thing!  I've been using a K6-III 400 for 2.5 years,
but will get a 1.4GHz Athlon in a few weeks.  But since I use BeOS,
everything happens instantly anyway! :-)

The LWFF was cable-driven, the newer Force GP is gear-driven.  (That's
why the old one won't work with the current drivers) The Force GT for
the PS2 is identical, so you can use it on the PC with drivers you must
download from http://www.racesimcentral.net/;If you would like to see wht
people think of the wheel, visit the GT3 forum at
http://www.racesimcentral.net/;The FF effects are supposed to be pretty
good.

The wheel is currently supported by HASCAR Heat 2002, Tokyo Xtreme Racer
Zero, and Twisted Metal: Black.  Since it is the new standard wheel,
most, if not all, future driving games should support it.

F1 Championship Season 2000 - unifinished port of the PSone version.
The 2001 vesion comes out in Oct.  Sony's highly acclaimed Formula One
2001 comes out in Sept.

Tokyo Xtreme Racer Zero - I played the DC version of TXR and loved it.

Ridge Racer V - utter ***as all of the RR series is.

NASCAR Heat 2002 - I hate NASCAR, but I must admit I liked this one when
I rented it.  It was developed by MGI, who did Viper Racing.

EA's NASCAR 2002 comes out this fall.

4x4 Evolution - a pretty good truck game.

Metropolitan Street Racer (or something like that) may be worth checnihg
out.

CART Fury - bigger arcade ***than RRV.

Driving Emotion Type S - stay away, far away!

Also, LeMans 24 Hours comes out on Aug. 21st and should be considered a
"must-have"!  It is a port of the Dreamcast version, not the crappy PC
one.  It was developed by a different team.

Lotus Challenge looks to be a vey good game.

An excellent PSone game is Jarret & Labonte Stock Car Racing a/k/a Toca:
World Touring Cars.

Get reviews and previews at http://www.racesimcentral.net/
http://www.racesimcentral.net/

BTW, the correct terminology is PS2, not PSX2.  You might get flamed in

That's pretty much a GT3 group, for now.

What games can you run on BeOS?

Mostly 2D type of stuff, but I think there is Quake II or some stuff
like that.  I am currently developing a backgammon-like game called
Vortex. Be Inc. is working on OpenGL, and the frame rates are 20% higher
than Windoze.
Here's a list. http://www.bebits.com/browse/2

Madden 2001/2002 , it is the finest NFL game I have ever played, Graphics
and animation are state of the art ( far better than the PC version even),
players atributes are fully modifiable, outstanding game.

NBA Street  , lotsa fun , extreme over the top style of basketball 3 on 3,
definitely fun

ATV off road Fury  , very good blend of arcade with a major amount of sim
physics added, made by makers of Motocross Madness ( also a great PC game )

Twisted Metal Black , pure arcade driving shooter, excellent visuals, loads
of fun

Up until you add in the AI which is very shoddy. When out braking
someone into a corner I don't want to be bounced off the track and
given a 10 second penalty by the AI rider who refuses to budge off
the preset racing line. The other thing is that it only has 5
tracks. Other than that it is a good game.

There are a LOT more than 5 tracks and I'm not counting REVERSE runs either.
Some of the series races have 7 tracks in and of themselves.  You access new
tracks the deeper you get into the game.

I have a couple more things:

1) the bikes, aside from the paint jobs, don't even remotely resemble
   500 GP bikes.

2) the physics really are a load of shite.  or maybe the bikes just
have way too much grip.  that may be it.  hard to tell.

great fun, though.

on second thought, I may only have tried it in arcade mode.
