Help me figure out what I've bought

by The Enigmatic O » Sun, 07 Jan 2001 02:46:26

        Hi, all.

I recently picked up a Racing Mania collection as it was on sale at
Circut City.  I grabbed it for Sports Car GT, which I've heard so much about,
and Road Rash, which was a favorite time-killer of mine back when I had a Sega
Genesis.

Anyway, a couple of questions.  One, are there any sites that are "must
visit" for Sports Car GT?  Any other advice on getting started with this one?
What about Road Rash?  Any sites at all out there?  (I doubt it, but doesn't
hurt to ask.)

Now, on to the rest of the package.  Andretti Racing.  I've heard
nothing but bad.  Add to my coaster collection, I assume?

Nascar Road Racing (EA).  Again, I assume it's pretty bad, but if
anyone says otherwise I'll give a listen.

Need for Speed 2.  Looks arcadish, but might be fun.  Anyone chime in?

Superbike World Championship.  No clue on this one.  Is it good?  Does
it suck?  Are there web sites?

        Thanks.

                                        -Tim

Hi Tim,

SBK is great for single-player racing or LAN.  It might not be dead on
physics like GP500 but the tracks are beautiful and the driving is fun.
Using the head-cam view, you really get into the action.  I recommend
installing it.  One thing, it will only allow 640x480 on a V5.  Good
thing you can use 4xFSAA.

Jason.

I loved Sports Car GT (SCGT). If it isn't already patched on the CD, make
sure you get the 1.551 patch from EA's web site. There are lots of SCGT
add-on sites out there as well - this is one of the most edited racing games
out there.

I played Need for Speed (NFS) 2SE, which was the version after 2. It was a
lot of fun. Not a "sim" but one of the most fun NFS's in the series in my
opinion (3 and 4 weren't very good, 5 was good).

Superbike is good too, if that's your cup of tea. Great graphics and good
performance. Didn't grow on me because I sucked at it...

V5?  Heh.  My machine is quite old which is why I usually buy older
games.  I'm assuming it should run fine on a V2.  I'm hoping, anyway.  Any
patches I need for SBK?  Add-on tracks?  3rd-party sites?

I ran SBK on a PII 333 with SLI'd V2's and it worked pretty well. I had to
turn a few things down if I recall but I could run it at at 1024x768 with
decent performance.

The V2 will work fine.  You'll get 800x600 as a choice for sure.  I
don't know of any patches; it worked fine out of the box for me.

I got this free with my wheel, and I have to say I like it.  OK, it's not a
sim, but it's great for making time pass quickly.  Good fun, but not if
you're looking for realism.  If you don't like it, I'll have it ... I
accidentally snapped the corner off the CD :-(

I played a lot of Andretti Racing when I first got into PC racing (a few years
ago), and had my fun with it.  However, if you're used to more modern sims,
such as GPL, most of the F1 games, etc, you'll tire of it quickly.  In other
words, I enjoyed it for a time, but don't have it on my HD anymore.  But, why
not try it out and see for yourself?

Regarding Superbike -- Install it.  My system is also a V2, and it runs great.
One thing it showed me is that a bike sim and an auto sim are 2 very different
things re: braking points, line, etc.  Lotsa fun though.

For SCGT, there are a couple good sites- but we have a good selection
of stuff(including some great Touring Cars, and a complete TC
add-on)as well as some knowledgable guys in the forums at The Pits.

Hope you find something you like!

I went, I looked, I found the SCGT forum.  What should I click
to see other SCGT stuff?

                                                           Thanks

So I've heard.  It's been on my list for awhile, I was just waiting to
get my wheel back.

Yeah, it's actually not too bad.  I've got the first one around
somewhere, too.  Doesn't really compare to Big Red Racing for pure arcadish
fun, however.

I seem to, as well.  Tough game.  Looks like a keeper.  Do you know of
any add-ons for this one?  Tracks?  Bikes?  Etc?

Road Rash is as fun as I remember, in a purely escapist fashion.
Nascar Road Racing has got to be one of the worst games I've seen.
Andretti...well, I'm not sure yet.

No suprise there.  I was checking the various links I have for GP2,
ICR2, Nascar99, etc.  I was just looking for any that weren't broader--the pits
have been in my bookmarks for a long time.

I might take you up on that offer.  Give me a little bit longer to play
with it, then get back to me in a few days.
