Try put the following line into the config.sys.  This should let you have
at least 630k of memory available.  It would go down a little bit if you
need the CD-ROM install.  I got this from PC *** magazine, so if you
have the back issues, check it out.

DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE 8096 RAM HIGHSCAN I=B000-B7FF
DOS=UMB
LASTDRIVE=Z
FCBS=4,0
DOS=HIGH

Some more things to remember:
- If you use DriveSpace/DoubleSpace/Stacker, whatever, chances are you
will lose. QEMM or EMM386 will give you enough base memory (probably)
but only just, and you won't have room for (m)any other TSRs. Besides
which, I'd never trust my data to one of those "disk doublers".

- Don't even think about loading Network drivers, either. It _can_
be done (I have NFS and Grand Prix together) but it ain't pretty...
