guess i'm too old & slow for n4

I've been racing this series since it debuted, and I consider myself a
pretty fair driver. Hey, I used to run the old online series and rarely
crashed! Even won a few.

I hadn't raced in awhile, but immediately bought N4 and had a go. Well, I've
been trying to run Daytona for a couple of weeks now, and I'm a complete
loser. I can't hold my line consistently at all, and we all know what that
means. I made 20 laps one time, but that was because I was at the back of a
draft, just holding on. I usually wipe out in the first 10 laps. In the
middle of a pack, I'm a wreck just looking for a place to happen.

Anyone else having the same frustrations? Or is everybody running like
champs?

I love the new physics model, but damn! This may make me climb back into the
B-17 and leave the racing to you young fellas.

I too have not finished a race at Daytona, I tried the arcade and lost
interest quickly. I went back to N3 until the patch to save the race
at certain points come out. I don't have the time to waste on a 40 lap
race, only to loose it all in one slip up. I can't even get to a point
where stategy comes in to play. I really like the N4 and look forward
to running it as much as I do N3. Until then I am happy with what I
have.

After 2,500 miles at 'Dega, I am at the point that I can go virtually the
entire race w/o crashing into something (or someone), and usually it is
because the AI pulls a boner on me (which of course means that I have
to anticipate the kinds of 'boners' the AI tends to commit and anticipate
accordingly).  Racing in a pack isn't much of a problem anymore - just
requires steel nerves and a deft touch on the wheel.
But attempts to get going on the other tracks have proved abortive.
Somehow the AI manages to keep running at 160 at the apex at Indy,
while I can't get above 140 w/o pushing out into the wall...

The secret to running n4 is to soften up the right springs a 100-200 lbs and
maybe lower the rear trackbar a notch.. try that and see if you handling doesnt
improve alot..

It's funny, but I'm having the opposite experience with N4.
After playing GPL and SCGT with the advanced options patch, I couldn't
play N3 worth a damn. Since GPL and SCGT all modelled cars that were
very much in motion on all axis, N3 felt very funky to me.
There wasn't enough body motion there to give me the cues as to when
the car was going to let loose, and the whole thing just looked and
felt kind of bogus.
Firing up N4, I felt like I was at home. It took a few laps to get
used to the camber setups, but within a few races I was able to run
clean laps and beat the AI at the small ovals.
I wouldn't call myself fast, but I'm definitely on the right path with
N4 compared to N3.

One thing you didn't mention was your system spec.
Are you maintaining 35+fps? N4 is definitely a hog, and a fast frame
rate is crucial.

I've noticed that using the roof view while learning Daytona and Dega's AI
helped alot, it's also easier to save the car.  I still get the damn
stuttering frames which I hope will go away with an Mx card?   Last night as
I sit in my garage racing, the hot water heater decided to bust.  Of course
the wife had to run in and slap me on the back to let me know about it.
Water 2' from me and I didn't even notice, now that's concentration!!  First
thing I did was move the tower off the floor..hehe!!!

Guys the fast setup in N4 is rather loose, and hard to hold the low line in
the turns. Consider tightening it up a little, or load the intermediate
setup and change it's gearing to match the gearing in the fast setup.
N4 is not that difficult, just takes some tweaking and getting used to. And
yes, I'm an old fart too :)

My specs: 800 AMD, 256 ram, geforce 2 32 mb, sb live, sidewinder ff wheel.

I'm running graphics at 900x720x16, direct3d, geforce ddr tnl. In practice
at Daytona I'm getting 35-40 fps, dropping to a low of about 18 on the
straights showing 12 cars ahead.

I'm gonna keep trying. N4 does feel right, even if I can't keep it pointed
in the right direction. Yet.

From what I've been reading here, you might pick up a few FPS by
running Open GL. I've seen a few posts stating differences of 8-10 fps
over D3D.

Set the steering to 1:32.  Set caster and camber to 0 on both tires.  Use
around 50% linear steering.  Make sure you have calibrated your wheel fully,
sometimes it takes 2 tries to get it centered properly.  Then, find a view
you like and STICK WITH IT - I find roof cam is the best.    Then drive 10
laps on the middle line, 10 laps on the low line and 10 laps on the high
line as smoothly as possible, pretending there is a car next to you.  Repeat
until you can do all 30 laps without wiping out. Get a feel for the limits -
how close you can get to the wall before touching, how close to the line you
can get before a wheel goes onto the apron. Finally, start a race with a
full field and skip qualifying, putting yourself at the back.  Slowly work
your way up through the field.  The first 20 times or so, the AI will wipe
you out on the first lap.  Eventually, you get a feel for how the AI
responds and you'll start making more and more laps before crashing.

Worked for me.  Hope this helps.
