What is THEFAST.COM?

by Brian Fergus » Fri, 21 Jul 1995 04:00:00

I have seen a number of postings re: THEFAST, but none have really
explained exactly what it is, what it does, and what it works with.
Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks,

What is THEFAST.COM?

Brain,

My guess (and I could be wrong) is that thefast copies the video bios
rom software to ram.  Ram can be read faster than Rom (I think this is the
case).  hence, any use of bios video code will go at a faster clip.  On many
computers the video bios rom code is copied to ram at bootup so thefast would
not have any effect.  also, most video cards come with a tsr program that
does the same thing (and might do it better than thefast=a generic program).
I noticed that the thefast.com program has a copyright of 1986-87, so it is an
old beast indeed.

Of course, I am no expert and everything I said above could be wrong.  On my
Micron powerstation (100 MHz pentium) thefast had absolutely no effect (the
video rom is shadowed at boot-up). I run nascar in svga mode with only some of
the texture on & 30 cars.  It would be nice to have all the texture on, but
perhaps that would require a 150 MHz pentium!
