Anyone have any info on Kyro II based cards?

by Robi » Thu, 04 Apr 2002 08:42:14

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the KyroII Hercules cards
with lower MHz. processors... or any links to relevant sites that have
tested these cards with lower MHz. processors? I have a chance to get one at
a pretty good price but I can see how it will end up very soon on one of my
older K6-III 450MHz. PCs on my network. I currently have an old Banshee in
it but I use it for some head to head racing with my brother over my network
and I was wondering if it would be worth the price ($85.00 Cdn.) of the
upgrade.

Robin

My Hercules Kyro II works pretty well here, except: Unreal Tournament
(freezes) and Superbike 2001 (clipping) on a PIII 700. Be aware of the so
called 256mb RAM bug, kyro II cards are supposed to run with no more than
256 MB.

Thanks, this is the type of thing I was looking for. Google hardly ever
brings up any sim-racing specific testing results. I was hoping for some
testing with a slower cpu but from the sounds of this test I don't think
I'll be getting the Kyro II based card. The system in the test on this site
is spec'd very close to my main *** system right now so I don't think the
Kyro II card would fare well in a K6-III based system. Anyone have any
recommendations for a cheap replacement (that would'nt be a total waste of
money) for a Banshee in a K6-III 450MHz. machine?

Robin

Got any more info or a link to something that talks about this
supposed "256MB bug" with Kyro II cards?  I have a Hercules Kyro II on
the way, and I'd like to know for sure if I need to uninstall 128MB of
RAM to get my system down to 256MB for compatibility.

You've tried the Kyro Superbike 2001 patch from www.hercules.com?

ftp://ftp.hercules.com/video/exe/KYROBASED/SUPERBIKE_2001_Patch.exe

DESCRIPTION :
Patch EA Sports Superbike 2001 for Kyro boards.

This patch increases performance and solves transparency issues in
Superbike 2001 from Electronic Arts.

NOTE :
This patch is not approved by EA and does not benefit from any support.

You can fix the graphical glitches using Jens' method -- shown below.  I
just use the enhanced 2D wheels when driving and have no problems with
FPS on my AMD 1.3GHz.

OMG, your settings made a difference like night and day on my machine!
Just using the REGEDIT4 stuff I went from 36 to 18 fps but using the
core.ini changes put it back to 36 fps at 1024x768 2xFSAA.  It does drop
to
~30 fps at the start when your deep in the pack, but it reaches 36 very
quickly -- certainly drivable AND I can read the font and see the replay
buttons!  Online should be maxed all the time because you can't see that
many other drivers.

Thank you, Jens.

Jason.

Uh, no issues on a box I've built with a T-Bird 1.4, a Kyro II, and 512MB of
PC133...

And I've got 1GB in my Kyro box, and it's fine.

Oops, actually I looked this up again and must confess that this "256mb bug"
was discussed in several
power VR Forums. Several posters suggested to try this in case the card
doesnt work.
This doesnt mean the cards generally dont work with more than 256!

I was looking for a fix for the UT-lockups. The card runs well in all games
except
UT and SBK 2K1(for which the patch causes other graphical errors here btw.)
