Same cars in GP2?

I tried out GP2 yesterday at a local game store
and no matter what car I drove it seemed to be the same!
Is this true or does it matter?
I finished 3rd in the Pacific at Monza
then I drove the Williams and finished 4th!
They all seemed to top out at 184 mph
(I didnt modify any gearing tho')

I really liked it but I would like to try the diff. cars

there is an option that you can set the levels to those of the 1994
season, or randomly <which i suspect you had set>, or that all cars
are even.

The way I understand it, regardless of which car or driver you choose to
play as, the player car always uses Williams for a default setting.

As far as I know, the cars all perform the same.
Until you modify the wings and gears etc.
I think it's better this way since you have no advantage in choosing
the most powerful car. You need to set the car up yourself (or pinch
someone else's setup) to be able to go faster than the other cars.
At Germany I think the cars top out at around 295kmh. I grabbed
someone else's setup and it's now up to 330kmh. A fair difference :)
