BTCC simulation?

by Richard Walke » Tue, 22 Feb 2000 04:00:00

Hi folks,

I'm on the lookout for a decent super touring car simulation, ideally
something based around the British Touring Car Championship.

I've bought TOCA 2, but it's just *so* much of a game, as opposed to a
simulation.  I'd like something which approaches the realism of MGP RS2, or
even GPL (!).

What is there?

I believe I can get TPTCC (The Pits Touring Car Championship) addon for
NASCAR '99 or NASCAR 2.  How close to the BTCC is this?  Can the UK tracks
be used, for example?

Surely, if I was to buy NASCAR now, I should go for NASCAR 3, but TPTCC is
only available for NASCAR '99/2.  :-(

Ideas, anyone?!

  Hi Richard.
While the TPTCC is a great Patch, when it comes down to it...you still
have rear drive v8 powered cars or trucks under the fancy BTCC or ASTCC
paintjobs.  I have been running the tptcc for over two years, but if a
British Touring experience is what you are looking for, this ain't it.
  The tracks are either from N99/2 or converted from ICR2/Cart Racing.
while some rather enterprising folks have taken the American tracks
and placed somewhat British graphics(Castles and such) the end result is
the tracks are still Road America, or Detroit, or Longbeach etc.
  What TPTCC does do, is give you Aussie V8 Touring cars for N99 and
also uses the trucks in N99 to convert over for Super Touring 2.0 litre
cars.  The sounds and***pits are first rate.  There are close to 100
Super Tourers that take part in at least some of the TPTCC events.
  But to buy N99 just for the TPTCC might not make sense at this time.
You are right about N3 being newer, but there are plans for at least the
V8 Super Cars from Australia to be updated to work with N3.  and I
believe plans are at least underway to organize an online N3 league once
the latest version of TPTCC is completed.  There is a truck addon
planned by Sierra for N3 so I imagine if the lads at the Pits get really
busy they may get a Super Touring patch up and available also for N3.
  Now...here is some other news.
 SCGT(Sports Car GT)[by E.A.] is a very user friendly sim.  There are
tons of cars and paintjobs available, and you can alter the physics
between front and rear and AWD with an editor.  Plus some TPTCC refugees
are attempting to make a BTCC experience with SCGT.  They plan on
creating the BTCC tracks.(so far only one small oval and one edited oval
have been completed by anybody but they are making progress)  So it may
pay to head over to gtinsider and keep your eye on the general forum.
Perhaps any announcements from the touring car editors will be there.
  Oh and I should mention.  About the converted tracks from ICR2/Cart
Racing.  They work just fine in N3 "IF" you have a 3dfx card.  If you
have some other 3d card, they just dont' work and you'd have to run them
in grainy software mode.  So keep in mind what hardware you have.

Since when did NASCAR 2 provide good enough physics to let you tell that it
is RWD rather than FWD? I couldn't tell. I plow straight in the turns more
than i spin backward into it

  Thats easy Cossie,
if you let the rear wheels get loose in a fwd sim car, all you need to
do is hammer
the throttle and the front driver will pull the rears back into line.
But with
N2, if you start sliding out the rear and don't catch it quickly with a
counter-steer,
no amount of gas-mashing will bring the rears back.
dave henrie
both scgt with the Advanced options editor, and the Sweedish touring car
sim allow you
to save a spin with the throttle.

Hi Dave...

Ah, I see.  Right.  That's the end of that idea then!  I'm actually happy
(in a way) because I downloaded a NASCAR '99 and NASCAR 3 demo, and didn't
really like either of them!  :-)

Ah ha!

Mmmnnn... BTCC tracks... lovely!

I've got GTinsider bookmarked!  Thanks for the information.

At the moment, GTinsider seems to have a rather 'vapourware' look about it,
but I hope this will change soon.

BTCC simulation?

Hmm...

I downloaded a demo of this earlier today.

It seems good for graphics/sound, and it could well be better than TOCA 2.
However, I can't get it to work with my Logitech WingMan FF (black) wheel
in the way I want.

If I use split-axis (like I do for MGP, GPL, TOCA 2), STCC thinks that when
I'm *off* the brake, I'm actually *on* it.  To makr the car go forward, I
have to release the brake pedal, and let go of it on the corners!!!  The
brake pedal is also *way* too sensitive.

I can't see any way to alter this behaviour, even in the controller
configuration part of the game.

If anyone using STCC with a split-axis setup?

OK.  I've managed to track down a demo version, and it seems quite good.  I
do have one problem though: I can't get my Logitech WingMan FF (black) to
work with split-axis support.

If I use split-axis, when accelerate, the game thinks I am braking aswell.
The result is a slow car!  :-)

The game works fine with 'combined axis', but that is just noddy.  I won't
be buying it if I have to use that.

Maybe it's an issue with the demo, and it's fixed in the game?  Anyone
know?

And is there any recent news on a possibly BTCC (or just Super Touring in
general) patch?

Regarding Swedish Touring Car Championship:
          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did have a problem enabling split-axis with the STCC demo, but that seems
to be OK now.  There is another problem with the controller though: every
now and then, the game stops reading from the controller and the car just
carries on with whatever it was doing... this makes me go straight on at
corners, for example!  Why is it doing this?  I quite like the look of some
bits of STCC (sound), despite other parts being quite poor (the setups).
Thanks everyone,
I would reccomend SCGT (or Sports Car GT for short).
I have TOCA and I found SCGT was a great improvement on this but
offering more options and loads of downloadable cars and editors.
I actually find that SCGT works best in a short race (TOCA
stuyle) format than a long (endurance style) race format.
Though you have the option for up to 72 hour or 9999 laps (10
days???) races, so it can cater for most peoples preferances.
Chris
Don't be so silly!  All you need is a Pentium 3, Voodoo 3 and a
FF Wheel!!!  Well thats according to this NG:)
  A) the demo had a problem with split axis pedals, it has been fixed in
the real game, and there is a patch to correct the demo.(used to be at
gtinsider, try there, or one of the links.)
  B)  I thought that was a poor attempt to show the front end
loosing grip.  there were some turns if you came in too hot, you just
pushed straight ahead like you described.  I know there are several
patches for STCC but I don't know if they improve the handling or just
the speed of the ai.
  this is from my poor memory, but he the control setup seemed to be
a-little confusing for some users.  You had to configure the keyboard
first or something like that before you could mess with the wheel/pedal
stuff.  I "think" I had my pedals from my lwff working properly in the
demo...
Great - someone else recommends the same thing!  :-)
Right, but does anyone know when a BTCC car set is likely to appear?  Or,
in fact, any kind of Super Touring machines?
SCGT looks good as a simulation/game, but I'm not really a fan of GT cars!
:-)  I'd rather have Super Touring cars in the game.
And has anyone looked at doing some replacement tracks?  Oulton Park (UK)
and/or Croft (UK) would be great!
Does anyone know where I can buy SCGT in the UK?  I've had a look in Game,
but can't find it.  I checked www.sportscargt.com but it was listed as
being 35ukp!!!  :-O
Surely that should be an AMD Athlon, not a P3?  And TNT/GeForce/G400
instead of Voodoo?!
:-)
[ SCGT ]
Ah, yes.  It's working now!  Thank you.
[ STCC ]
No, It's definately not due to me attempting to corner too fast - it's not
understeer.  The lights on the controller flicker when it happens.
I think it could be something to do with my sound/game card being a pile of
pants.  I really should invest in one of those CL 1024 thingumies...
[ STCC with split axis ]
Hmm!  It seems to be working OK now!  The controller setup screen is well
dodgy!!!
Oh, and it doesn't work at all with my controller if I have CTFJ loaded (to
give me a slightly longer brake pedal) which is irritating.
