CART qualifying sessions on road courses

I was wondering how much time CART gives to cars to post a qualifying time
during qualifying sessions on road courses.  In the computer simulation/game
"IndyCar Racing II" by Papyrus, drivers are only given ten minutes to qualify
(which strikes me as odd, considering F-1 has hour-long qualifying sessions).

I believe CART also splits the competitors into two halves, with one half given
time to qualify, then are taking off the track so the other half can try to
qualify.  Is each half only given ten minutes?  More?  -=LESS=-?!

And do they have qualifying on only one day, or two?

Qualifying for an IndyCar (CART) event:

Road Course:    4 one half-hour (30 minutes) Qualifying sessions,
                Friday: 1st session, "slower" cars
                Friday: 2nd session, "faster" cars
Saturday: 1st session, "slower" cars 2nd session
Saturday: 2nd session, "faster" cars 2nd session

Oval:   1 session through the whole field on Saturday,
2 warm up laps followed by 2 timed laps in a row
Can make the field through "Promoters Choice"
(kinda like NASCAR's Provisional Starting spots) if
something disasterous happens during your qualifying run
or to your car just before qualifying

CART teams have two days to qual, Fri and Sat.  Qualifying is split into two
groups who have 30 mins green each.  BTW you can change the length of time you
have to qual in ICR2 by altering the setting (I can't remember which one) in
the <track>.txt file...

CART qualifying sessions on road courses

While F1 may give an hour for the qualifying session, each driver is limited
to 12 laps.  Drivers are also limited to a maximum of 30 laps per day of free
practice.  Any laps over the 30 maximum taken are deducted from that drivers
12 allotted qualifying laps.  If a driver takes more than 12 laps, ALL times
recorded by the driver are cancelled (better be careful counting laps), not
just those that were extra!

I'm not sure what the exact time limit of the CART qualifying session is
(it might well vary from track to track), but 10 minutes seems quite short.
It would not give enough time to even take a couple of warm-up laps. What
might be the case is that there is  a 10 minute window during the qualifying
session when lap times are counted. I do know that you are correct about
the drivers being split up into different groups to reduce track congestion
during qualifying sessions.

F1 used to use two days for qualifying, this year it is only one day,
usually the day prior to the race.  I belive that CART uses two days
to conduct two qualifying sessions (preliminary and final) usually
held the two days prior to the race (Friday and Saturday).

CART qualifying sessions are 1/2 hour long.  It also differs from F1
qualifying in that there's no lap limit in CART.  In F1, each driver
gets at most 12 qualifying laps--exceed that, and all times for that
session are thrown out.  CART also continues the old F1 practice of
having two qualifying sessions, one on Friday and one on Saturday.
This year in F1, there is a single Saturday session (makes a better
TV show).

This is true.  For the Friday afternoon qualifying session, the times
from the Friday morning free practice are used to split the field into
slower and faster halves.  The slow half gets 1/2 hour of qualifying,
then the faster half gets 1/2 hour.  The times from the Friday
qualifying session determine the slow/fast split for Saturday qualifying.

CART has two one-half hour sessions and it is done over two days.
